4X4 failed when I needed it!??????????

Hey all! Yesterday....as I usually do....I was confident and had no reason not to be pulled onto a job into some deep sugar sand. Figured if I spin, I'll just turn the **** and lock 'er in. Well, I turned the **** and she did not lock in. I said . So I tried to rock a little bit.....and let my PSD just go ahead and totally bury me..... Then tried 4X4 again. This time it locked in and I backed right out. Now I am and fool around with it a little more. It locked in three out of five tries. I had to go so a little later I messed with it a little and it worked fine...no problem. My question is this. Is this just because the truck is new and stiff? Or is there a potential problem I need to have looked at? My F-150 has the dash control also and I have never has a problem with it.....although if I don't use 4X4 for a while, it clunks a little louder and harder than normal the first time then it is fine. The S/D just seems to react a little different than the F-150, so that is why I am asking the question

Both my father in-law and I have had this problem. When it has happened to me, I had the luxary to just keep driving and within 20 ft it finally locked in. The father in-law didn't have that luxary. We finally got out locked the hubs and within a few feet it locked in. I have heard that you can by Warn manual hubs and cap off the vac lines and it will correct the problem. But then you will always have to get out and lock your hubs in (PITA). Let me know if you find a more reasonable fix.

Thanks CBSUPERDUTY! I am going to fool around with it a little more when I have time. I may go he Warn route if I have to. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this situation. BTW saw your pix of acetoned emblems. Man! they look nice....good pic. I am going to do it on mine.

This was talked about a little in this thread.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID117/4146.html

Think of the auto hubs as a convenience. Remember that it requires vacuum to build sufficiently and rotation of the hub before it will lock. This takes time and space, something you may not have if you've already driven into sugary sand or you're stuck. The ESOF system basically requires you to plan ahead and engage it BEFORE you get stuck or might need it, not to to help you get out after you're stuck.

The Warn hubs aren't really required, as the stock hubs perform the exact same function. You could simply plug the vacuum lines to them and use them as manual locking hubs if you so desired.

4X4 failed when I needed it!??????????

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Nov-02 AT 10:53 AM (EST)]CB and CJ,

These are honest questions, so please forgive my ignorance. Why would you want to replace the hubs that you currently have (auto/manual) with manual only? What are the Warn hubs buying you that you don't have now?

In the situation that CJ described above, could he not have changed the hubs from auto to lock and had the 4x4 engage? If it didn't engage, then there would seem to be a problem with something other than the hubs. I hope not, that sounds expensive...

Best regards,

Jeff

Added on edit: Sorry, Waxy! It looks like you type faster than I do...

79CJ...Thanks for the compliment!

Yeti... OK so it was a little .

JKBridges..I don't know that there is a true advantage. I have not done this so I can only guess. I would say that since these hubs have a tendancy to become extremely hard to turn, some people figure they might as well change them out while they are down there to plug the vac lines.

Also just read on "Another" site that you may lose you defrost when 4X4 is engaged with the plugged lines. And NO I don't know why.

they are working like they should! read your manual. on the girly
auto locks you have to lock them and then move truck to lock..... if you are not moving they may not work........but the new one have auto and lock settings just for that reason......give me man. type or death
i lock the wheels then leave it in 2wd if i need 4wd i can pull shifter in floor and it is LOCKED.....and at almost any speed works
every time

While we're on the subject of hubs... I've been thinking of going to 4x4 on the next truck. Just wondering what you get with the manual shifter. Manual hubs? I'd really like plain old 4x4.
