I noticed something odd!!!!!!

I have been building a cab roller for my 57. As I was measuring the frame to make the cab mounts I noticed the hole in the front cab mount bracket on the passenger side is elongated and not from wear. The drivers side is just a round hole. Both the back mount holes are not elongated. Any one else notice this or have a bare frame to compare. There must be a good reason for this and maybe it has something to do with the assembly line procedure. Anyone have a idea?

Charles,

Nobody has replied because they're all out in their garages unbolting their cabs to check. 'cept Daryl "Butch 302" Stone - he's booking an appointment to have a professional lift off his cab.

I noticed that last winter when I had the cab off my 58. I'm pretty sure it has to do with adjustment, but I'm still confused why they didn't do it on the front left one as well.

Never having seen the assembly line I can only conjecture two things.

1. That portion of the cab was lined up first and having the slot allowed them to work faster. After one was in the others would line up easier.

2. A variance in the front cab floor width.

At least I'm not the only one that saw it.

I think that may be an "Expansion Compensator".
It is designed for individuals like Ferggie, so that as they grow older the sides of the cab can be "Let Out" to match their ever expanding postirior.

Sounds like the days of old at Ford where they were still putting a round bolt in a square hole. Result: the inevitable Ford rattle. Probably designed that way back in the day to make assembly quicker and easier; for adjusting the cab onto the frame during assembly; or all of the above.

Just my $.02
Daryl
