Kind of an odd question maybe, but I have been wondering...
I've always had gas burners and have a friend with a diesel. It certainly pulls like a SOB but as far as straight line acceleration he's toast.
Now we (the gas guys) are always talking HP and I know diesels are a little short in the HP department but more than make up for it in torque. I have always been lead to believe that torque is better for getting something moving than HP. I even realize this more so now that I have supercharged my truck.
So why are the diesels slower (or aren't they) even though they make gobs more torque than gas engines?
It all depends on the Engine, Weather its turned up or not weather its Turbo Charged or not? Building Pre Launch Boost is the key to make it Quick. My Truck Is very Quick off the line with The Flip chip and its scary With the Propane on. One Of the guys I know runs 11.42 in the Quarter at 118mph in a 8000 pound truck so you be the Judge, Is that QUICK? I say YES it is. There is another Turbo Diesel I have watched that Absolutly Kills Mustangs,Camaros, And anything else that want to run him.
Yes, that is not only quick, its fast! I was thinking more along the lines of stockers though (that's an even better question, what produces better modded gas or diesel engines?). I'm going to guess your a bit below the gas engines in HP but way way above in torque.
It kind of refutes the fact that torque is better than HP in the acceleration department doesn't it?
Well The truck I talked about is 800HP and 1400Ftlbs My truck is around 375hp and 750ftlbs with the chip and propane. I always liked Gassers But after the Diesels there is no comparasin IMHO
As is my truck weighs in at almost 9K lbs with full fuel tanks (not counting my 90 gallon tank in the bed) and while it wont beat a camero or mustang, she will sure give them a scare. Now when you compare weight to power ratios, I'd say that's damn "quick". And still gets 16 mpg.
As far as hp numbers, I dont realy think much about that. My truck has a job to do and it does it beond my expectations. It pulls trailers like they aint nothin, it will yank a stump out of the ground with ease, it has fun playing off road, it drives me to and from work, and it will change folks minds that think diesel trucks are slow. I get a kick out of the kids at stop lights that like to rev up their motor, they always have the funniest look on their face when this big ol pickup goes roaring past them with the turbo whailing away!
I had a gasser "03" 1/2 chevy PU pull up along side me yesterday with a punk driving, glaring and laughing at me with his punk boyfriend, etc.,
I delivered him a smoke sandwich. After I left him standing, he caught up with me about 1/2 mile later and drove by cowering, I couldn't stop laughing.
Last weekend I attended a meeting of a local Ford pickup club, which is mostly populated by F150's in various trim. I was one of only two Powerstrokes there, the other one was bone stock. When the meeting broke up, Mrs. Quadzilla and I got back on the freeway for the drive home. I saw an F150 pull up along side, and realized that it was one of the guys from the meeting, who had gone on and on about how much hp his truck was putting out. I flipped my chip over to "extreme" and since the propane was already on, it was merely a matter of putting the throttle down 2/3 of the way to lose him in the rear view mirror. By the time I got home and logged on, he had already posted on the local board that I had handed him his butt on the freeway, and that diesels shouldn't be taken lightly. There's an example of at least one gasser that thinks diesels are quick.
Hehehe. Atleast he had the kahonies to admit he got wooped! I know too many guys that would try and make up stories or excuses. Some folks just cant stand the thought of a 'slow diesel' being faster than them.
I'd realy like to see Mad Dog go up against some folks from that school of thought
I've always like a gas V-8, but the day my Father got a 1997 powerstroke, and lit up the dual-rears off idle (no boost), I learned to give the diesels a whole lot of respect. Not only that, but if I tried to tow what you guys can I would be doing 15 MPH in 2nd gear!
