First of all, I have to say, this site is awesome!
My 460 is tired, so I’m upgrading. I went as large as I thought I could go with being able to pass CA smog requirements. Comp XE262H cam, Pro-Topline fast burn heads, final compression 9.12:1.
Can anyone tell me if I’m going to have to reprogram the ECM? And if so, it appears the EEC Tuner is the way to go?
A buddy of mine is from Grass Valley! Anyway, what year is your truck? Is it the original 460 in it? What kind of duration do you have with that cam? Are you still running a smog pump? Will the EEC allow you to de-tune it to pass smog if you're that close given the performance mods?
The new cam intake duration is .262, which is an increase from stock (.256), but I’m increasing the cubic inches by 61 cubes (1 liter).
The Truck is a 1995 F-250 supercab longbed with an E4OD, 4:10 rear-end.
My plan is to put a new F3 long block in it, minus the intake manifold. It's being built by a company in S. California. So I'm planning on pulling the old one out, and dropping the new one in, bolting everything back up.
Pretty mild upgrade on the cam, so the increase on exhaust as a result of longer duration in the lower end should not put you over the smog limit here in Cali. If you're running a decent octance gas, EFI and witha smog pump, you should be ok.
Yeah, I'm gonna use the stock fuel injection, stock intake, stock exhaust manifold. The Heads are a direct replacement for the factory heads, with performance gains, maintaining the 92cc volume, the heads are getting ported and polished. I'm shipping the existing intake manifold to them for beed blasting and do a clean up cut. They are going to mount. Comp roller rockers, guide plates. I decided to go with sealed powercast rings. The intake and exhaust valves will be stock size, Intake 2.08, exhaust 1.66. I'm hoping the EEC-IV will not have to be modified too much. I'm prepared to purchase a tuner.
Sounds like a mover! Good luck on the build. You should pass smog, too. Let us know how it goes. BTW, who in SoCal is building the long block? Lots of good builders/shops down in my old stompin' grounds...
