I'm new to explorers. I just bought a 94 sport that had been sitting for 4 months. My question is where on the temp gauge is normal for your explorer at full operating temp? I think that mine might be stuck in a partially open position. It seems to take a while until it warms up. Then it only goes to the "N" for normal sometimes it goes to the "O" while on the expressway but then quickly drops back down when I stop at a light. Also when I start my truck from cold when I hit mid- temp after about 5 miles off driving my check engine light comes on and stays on...
any thoughts anyone.
I know autozone will pull the code and I plan on doing this over the weekend.. I'll post a follow up with my findings..
This time of year, my Explorer runs in the NO range. If you want, you can verify temperature by backprobing the PCM's ECT sensor, monitor the voltage, and then use the chart available in many manuals to convert the voltage to temperature.
If you don't want to take the truck into Autozone to get the code, on a '94 you can get the codes with nothing more than a paper clip. The codes are output as flashes of the CEL. Follow the instructions available in any good manual, in a file called "gtest.pdf" (link available in this forum. use search engine being sure to set the time option so it will search back to last summer), or at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
I'm not sure you're going to get a code indicating a bad thermostat. Thermostats are part of normal maintenance, so I suggest you replace it. Easy repair.... Don't forget to also get the round o-ring gasket for it. Normally, that's sold seperately.
thanks for the suggestion about self testing for codes, I didn't realize you could do that yourself. Great tip for a newcomer like me. I'll definately check it out this weekend!
