Ebpv operation ?

When it is really cold out my ebpv stays on or closed (not sure which term is correct) for a while after temp gauge reaches normal opp temp. I Get the hissing noise and low boost and power. I think it has to do with the oil temp. After it is driven for a while noise goes away and power comes back and boost acts normal again. I thought about unhooking it, but if it is in fact working off of oil temp it seems like it is a may be a good way to know when the engine oil is up to safe opperating temp on thoose cold mornings. Is this a valid theroy or am I off in left field on this one? I am assuming mine is working properly since I have no codes stored for it.

Two stages to the EBPV operation. One is temp, the PCM can command the ebpv up to 167*F oil temp. The other is engine load, the pcm is allowed to close the ebpv in low load conditions. So when the ebpv quits hissing the Oil temp is above 167*F or your foot is in it. Here a little test, drive alond at around 40mph and feather the throtle and you should hear the hiss - increase pressure on the pedal and the his should go away. Keep in mind that NOT is 190 - 200 *F so even when the EBPV Quits activating the truck is not yet up to full NOT.

Thanks Alan,
I wasn't aware of the 190 200 * mark. I thought the 167 was the magic #. I am sure that is even more improtant with 15w40, I guess it just takes a long time to heat up almost 4 gallons of oil in this cold weather. Mine works like you said around 40 mph with the throttle. You can even see it working in the boost gauge. I started to ask that post in the other post but I didn't want to hijack.

Yeah, I think you are OK. Bet you're getting the higher EGTs and lame boost #s while it's on too.

You're not kidding. I've got oil and water temp gauges (Autometers) and I have noticed that it does take a long time for the oil to come up to temp. When it's below freezing, it can take 20 minutes or more of driving around town to bring the oil up to even 180 degrees.

I am sure of the lame boost as it's easy to see in the gauge. I suspected the high egt's as well. Since my gauges are new and I haven't driven it much since the install, I am still learning what normal egt's will be. But now that you mention it I would tend to agree they seem high.

Yeah, I'd say thats pretty much what I am seeing as well.
I also notice that on short trips around town (shopping and such) even once the oil heats up to the point that the EBPV isn't called for by the PCM, the oil will cool surprising fast while in the store to the point that the PCM enables it again at startup.

Thanks all for the info
John
