Ford E250 Overheating

E250 overheated on Wednesday and had it towed to the dealer. They said the T-stat was stuck closed and they replaced it.

Next day...same story... going up same hill...overheated...check engine light comes on...coolant leaking out of the fill reservoir. Towed it in again...now they say the radiator is 25% blocked and they say they will put a new one in tomorrow.

Is this possible? Year 2000...59,000 miles...always serviced regularly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Paul

Sounds fishy to me. I have had a new thermostat that was bad. Does your van have a clutch fan or an electric? Could be the fan clutch or motor, whichever you have.

Did they put the T-stat in backwards?

So, here's the latest: The dealer put a new radiator in yesterday. Cost nearly $500. This was on top of the $168 it cost to replace the T-stat on Monday.

Seems to be working OK. I still do not understand why the radiator would be blocked up after only 59,000 miles. I was told these radiators are aluminum/plastic. The old radiators that were made of brass/copper would probably give at least 100,000 miles of service.

I plan to pick up the old radiator tomorrow or the next day. They forgot to give it to me the day I picked the van up from the shop.

I will open the old one up and see what I can see. I am very curious about what caused this "25% blockage". I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks for your support and interest in this.

Paul

Hey, Paul, what did you find in that radiator? I'm pretty darn curious, too.

Since the new radiator was installed, the van has been running fine. I did take the "old" one home and removed the plastic bottom section. There was no accumulation of anything unusual and as far as I can tell the fins appeared OK as well.

I'm not convinced that there was anything wrong with the old radiator.

???????????? I'm confused about the whole thing and not real sure I would ever buy a Ford again. I may have to check out the new diesel Freightliner vans.

Maybe they did put the thermostat in backwards and came up with the radiator story as a coverup and reinstalled the thermostat right when it was in for the radiator. Sounds more like a dealer problem than a Ford problem.
Well, anyway, glad you got it fixed and thanks for the update.

Yes, this one incident should in no way be Ford's fault... Fact it if you bought the van used, and someone had thought there was a leak in the coolant system they may have used a stop leak product which can and will cause blockages. It may also have just been an incorrectly installed t-stat. I would never take a vehicle to the dealer unless it's a warranty repair, and even then I would have an outside mechanic check the work. You can trust me on this, you not find a tougher work van than a Ford. This is not the voice of bias, this is the voice of experience. Look at what is on the road. I see more ford vans than any other brand.
