I have a problem where all exterior lights function except the turn signals. I've tried replacing the steering column flasher unit guessing there was a short there but nooo. Someone on the forum mentioned the circuit behind the dash. Does anyone have similiar malfunctions? Any input would be appreciated. It's an older '78 E100.
Do your head lights work? If so then theirs is more then likey a short in one of the sockets. Also check the light switch it self for shorts. My 76 had multible shorts when I first got it.
You probably have 2 flashers, one for turn signals, and one for the 4-ways. Does the one you found click when you turn on the 4-ways? If so, then look for another flasher up under there somewhere.
To Chateau76, yes, the headlights function. Like I said, I(my friend and I) painstakingly went through the wiring and managed to get the rear light functional(brake and reverse lights). But this pesky no turnsignal thing persists. Some poster mentioned behind the dash theres are turnsignal circuits that might need grounding. I haven't tried yet but as I mentioned when I turn on the headlights the right turnsignal indicator on the dash comes on half way lit with a solid light so that would seem to indicate a short there, yes?
It is possible that it is a grounding problem. Check in the rear interior, near where the tail lights are that the there is a grounding wire that's attached to the chassis -- I don't remember if it is driver's or passenger's side. If this little grounding wire comes loose and breaks contact the turn signals act real funny, similar to what you described.
