HEATED MIRRORS????

OKAY, This is a question I had from my mirror swap on a '99 S/D. When i pulled the old mirors off, there was two plugs from the mirror, however at the harness there was only one plug. The other one coming from the mirror was not hooked up. There was a symbol printed on the old mirrirs that resembeled a defrost icon on the dash board. I assume this means HEAT. Now for the question, was there heated mirrors on a '99???? The new trailer tow mirrors had the same plugs, by the way, also. I also have the trailer tow mirrors on my '02. Could they be heated as well and how can I tell. And if they are how do you control them. My buddy says his wife's BMW has heated mirrors that are always on. How does Ford's work?????

Somebody will be along to answer this more accurately but I will try. Soccer Buses (X) have the heated mirrors or at least the option. They will fit on our trucks. I don't know how you wire them, but I have been told that when you do you should go to the bone yard and find a mid-90’s Explorer. It will have a rear defrost button and in the wiring there will be a relay or something that puts the mirrors on a timer.

Hope this shed's some light on things.

If these mirrors work the same as Lincoln (I assume they would), they are activated by the rear defrost. When you turn on the rear defrost via the button, the mirror heaters kick in. Since the defroster has a timer, the mirrors don't. It is also great when you get that mist on your mirrors from road spray. Dries it right up. I drive limo's part time and you learn real quick how to get the most out of your mirrors when you are driving a 20 foot luxury sedan.

My truck is slightly over 20 feet long... and closer to a luxury sedan than any of my previous trucks! Have you thought about installing the trailer tow mirrors on the limo?

OK CBSUPERDUTY, I think this answers it. I guess that all the trailer tow mirrors have the heater wiring, but since the EX uses the same ones Ford just makes them all with the wiring. I was just puzzled by that extra wire, where it went, and if it did go somewhere, how did it work. BUT since the '99 did not have the plug on the harness, I guess it could go nowhere
Man, I better get ot of here, I am starting to confuse myself Anyway, CBSUPERDUTY, I guess you actually did answer my question! THANKS

HEATED MIRRORS????

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 05:44 PM (EST)]The heated mirrors are on the exursion,if you can get a set of them for an excursion. The rear defroster relay is also needed.plus the rear defrost switch
it is my understanding that if your mirrors were to have heaters in them they also would have directionals in them also.
In looking at the wiring diagrams the pickups are not setup for heated mirrors.
this was all stated above ,just wanted to clarify ,according to manuals there were no heated mirrors on pickups!
Ceejay
what color wire was extra in your mirrors do you remember?
was it dark green /violet?

I'm confused Forty (what else is new?). You said heated mirrors are not available on pickups. Are you trying to say this is not a factory option (which is true) or that you can't modify it that way? You know the way I am -- I love "conveniences." Heck, if this is doable, I might start watching for Excursion mirrors on eBay or drop my phone # with the local junkyards. If this is doable, any idea which year Expe's would be compatible for a 2002 F-250? Do the heated Expe mirrors still have as much glass as my elephant ears? Darn, I'm just full of questions tonight...

Haroutd !
Thats what I was saying no superdutyies that I know of have them !
03's I couldn't tell you !or whats coming in the future ! it would be a nice option though.
I believe only excursions will fit ,don't know if expy's are the same or not.if they did they are a little smaller and would be a nice crossdressing thing for Duty's that Plow Snow! he he he
according to my 02 manuals it's doable
the gem module controls the time they are on,at least thats the way I see it.

Components needed are :
rear defrost switch
rear defrost relay
the mirrors
wiring of course
and a chk to make sure the wiring harnesses are the same between excursion and superduty pickup.

HEATED MIRRORS????

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 06:54 PM (EST)]Haroutd, this thread got me thinking too. I'm thinking that if I have the same power trailer tow mirrors on my F350 that have heat on the EX, then seeing as how Ford is really cheap, they might be exactly the same, just not wired. What do you think?

What I'm thinking is that if the heat element is there, and just not wired to the cab, I'll wire it myself. I don't need the fancy controls, just a simple on/off toggle switch wired directly from the mirrors into the cab. I was also thinking about buying an aftermarket heater (basically just a resistor of some kind, maybe even a handlebar warmer setup) and mounting it to the back of the mirror and wiring it as I described. I'd have to take a mirror off and see what's back there. It's on my list of things to do over the holidays. Let me know what you think.

Waxy

ON EDIT: I just checked the Ford website, and power HEATED trailer tow mirrors were a $285 (CAN) option in '02 on the Excursion. Since they are identical to mine, it makes me think mine just might be wired for heat.

HEATED MIRRORS????

>>it is my understanding that if your mirrors were to have heaters in them they also would have directionals in them also.

My heated mirrors do not have turn signals built in.

_____________

Haroutd, stop calling the Excursion an Expe. Call it an "X" or something... Expedition mirrors (if that is what you were referring to) are NOT interchangable.

Check...but I believe that some trim levels of the new '03 coming out have heated mirrors.

You can wire some Excursion mirrors to work but you should probably have them on some kind of timer like the factory does. They must have the switch "time out" for a reason.

If anyone wants my elephant ear, HEATED MIRRORS, for their TT mirrors. Drop me a line. Heat is for sissies. :P Just like ESOF. If anyone wants that too then.....
