I have a 1991 E150 Van. Can anyone tell me what controls the spark advance. It retards at start-up when the engine is hot. I suspect it is a module, but I have no idea which one it would be and where it is in the engine. Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

I just picked up a 91 E-150 Club Wagon. I've noticed that my engine light comes on occasionally, but only when the engine's warm. The only bad thing that I've experienced is a slight tendency to stall when idling a long time in traffic when it's warm.
I'm not real familiar with how Ford handles spark retard, but my 94 Camaro has a knock sensor that controls spark retard. If you have the 302 w/EFI like I do, I'd guess that it probably has a knock sensor as well. I don't know it's location, though.
What symptoms are you experiencing? Loss of power? Poor fuel efficiency?
I do have the 302 w/EFI. When the van is shut off after the engine is hot, it won't start for an hour or two. Also, if sitting in traffic allong time and the engine gets hot it stalls and won't start again for an hour or so. Does anyone know if this engine has a knock sensor and where it is?
Sounds like standard bad ignition module symptoms to me. It's attached to the side of the distributor. The parts store can probably test it for you, or a Haynes manual tells how to test it with a meter, but it might test good when cool but act up when it's hot. I've had a couple of Fords with symptoms identical to yours, and new modules fixed 'em. Far as I know, the knock sensor cannot cause this problem, but since you asked, the knock sensor is at the very back of the engine screwed into the lower intake manifold.
