Yeah My dad had them on 2+2 mustang when he was younger. I never heard it but he lives by it. I guess you would just cut off the pipes after the headers and weld the drive shafts on. But you have to make sure they are identical, Unless you have a four banger then you only need one. I saw a Do#ge with side pipes that had a diamond plate box welded on top and doubled as running boards. Sittin here thinkin about it, why am i telling you? I should be puttin it on my truck. lol If you do it you HAVE to show me pics.
no. Have you ever knocked on a drive shatft? They aren't that thick. Not any thicker than exhaust pipe. The main weight to drive shafts are the u-joints and the ends, but you have to cut them off anyways.
No. They aren't that thick. The only heavy part to a drive shaft are th u-joints, but you have to cut them off anyways. I mean they are heavier than exhaust pipe, but you are cutting out the muffler so you can spare the extra weight. And if you are serious about doing it you can have brackets made ( you would probably have to anyways with regular straight pipes). I was just asking my dad about it, and he said some cars have shafts that are larger at one end?? (i have never seen them) But if you put the small end in the back you would still reduce pressure, but keep a little back pressure to keep the motor running right. Habe you ever knocked on a driveshaft? Or heard a rock or something hit it? It rongs and it would sound great as a muffler. Maybe you could even get a tunable muffler after it so you could turn it down if you wanted.

if i run piping that is the same size end to end will i be ok? ive never done straight pipes before. im pretty sure i will be, but this back pressure talk has me second guessing...
yea, i know the noise of rocks and wrenches on driveshafts. has a nice ring to it! im actually pretty serious about trying this. i think it'll be a fun project. ill have to email u when i start workin on it. probly not for another 2-3 weeks :-( ive got a banged up truck bed that needs alot of body work and a good old fashion paint job!! that pretty much consumes my time for the next 2-3 weeks! anywayz, thanks for the idea man. ill get back to ya on it. if u or your dad have anymore ideas, lay em on me!
My dad said it is going to be LOUD! we are working building up a '79 F-250 and we are going to put driveshafts on it, but he wants to add a muffler. I want it LOUD! I guess whatever you want you can do, but just make sure you dont get in trouble with the law.
im gonna run them straight out the back. im gonna put em on my chevy cheyenne first. it has a 4.3 v6 so im lookin for somethin to give it some rumble since it lacks the v8! it will probly still be pretty loud! the way i figure it i can always slap a couple mufflers on it if need be...
i think ill keep my ford the way it is until i run them on the cheyenne. the chevy is my new offroad project. nothin huge, im not a millionare and im still in high skool. so far just 3" lift and 32" bfg mudders. thinkin bout droppin a 350 in her this summer, but i kinda like my gas mileage right now
anywayz, i hope this will gimme good sound with that engine
Yeah, I'm in high school too. Last year though. I know what you mean about the sound of the 4.3L. Thats whats in my dad's sonoma. It can use some beefing up to make it rumble a little.
And to 85351ho, what else are you going to use old drive shafts for? At least we get some use out of 'em.
