Tachometer

My 86 didn't include a tach...

I was wondering how hard it would be to install one...I assume that if I purchase an aftermarket one it will include a cable...how would I hook it up?

Also, what is the redline for this engine? What are the suggested shifts?

Thank you!

3500rpm for the fastest acceleration stock, I shift at about 2500 for daily driving. True redline is about 4500rpm, at about 5000 she starts to vibrate pretty good.

Most aftermarket tachs need only a wire to the distributor terminal on the coil. Really pretty simple. Of course, where to mount it is a different story.

Some older setups were cable driven, like a speedo. But those are very uncommon now.

My tach has 3 wires. Ground then a green and yellew I plugged into the plug off the coil. I run mine up to 4000 rpms, but recently run her over a few times doing some fancy shift work playing in the snow with my friends.

Yeah, junk yard is your best bet. find a cluster with a factory tach and maybe you can pickup some other useful stuff while your at it. The whole cluster should just bolt in.

Anybody ever just use a stand alone adjustable shift light? I mean, if the whole idea is not to over rev the engine, or hit your shifts for maximum acceleration, then why not go with an adjustable shift light? I know that proform makes a light that you is adjustable, and doesn't require anything extra added to the stock ignition and cost only $25. Anyone ever used one before?
