Most aftermarket tachs need only a wire to the distributor terminal on the coil. Really pretty simple. Of course, where to mount it is a different story.
Some older setups were cable driven, like a speedo. But those are very uncommon now.
My tach has 3 wires. Ground then a green and yellew I plugged into the plug off the coil. I run mine up to 4000 rpms, but recently run her over a few times doing some fancy shift work playing in the snow with my friends.

Anybody ever just use a stand alone adjustable shift light? I mean, if the whole idea is not to over rev the engine, or hit your shifts for maximum acceleration, then why not go with an adjustable shift light? I know that proform makes a light that you is adjustable, and doesn't require anything extra added to the stock ignition and cost only $25. Anyone ever used one before?
