I posted this on the SD board yesterday. I have noticed the last couple of days that my intake is howling at idle, off and on. I never noticed until I started searching for the source of the noise, that the air filter housing has two large holes in it, facing the fan. This is where the noise is coming from. If I cover the holes with my hand, the noise stops. It is really loud and is starting to bug me. The answer on the SD board was, maybe the intake is clogged with something and too much air is being sucked into these holes. I checked, there is no obstruction. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks... HX
Not sure, but i think mine has some holes but they are on the bottom. Do you still have that little snorkle thing in the front of your airbox? If you do it is probaly restricting it enough to cause it to try to suck thru those holes causing the noise.
Yes, I haven't messed with the air box at all, I still have the snorkel. It's been there since July, what would all the sudden clog it? I didn't find any type of obstruction. My holes face the fan. One is directly to the side, the other is lower, at about 7 oclock.
Mine started this week. It seems to be there on the first cold start of the morning/night after sitting for 8 hours. Its a high-pitched whine that leaves as the engine warms up. I haven't looked into it yet, too darn cold to stand outside in the wind and hunt it down.
Nope, never have done anything around that area. I took the filter out today and looked, except for two black circles ( where the holes are) it looks pretty much new. I did notice though, that when I took the filter housing apart, the intake housing fell off of the intake itself. When I put it back on, it slid on as if it was never tightened down. I tightened the band clamp. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, I doubt it was supposed to be that loose. Haven't started it again to see if the noise is gone.
Thanks Monsta. I hadn't had the guts to go in the cold and look into but when I finally do, I'll look where you mentioned first.
My truck is definately more noisey in the cold weather. Since new, one of the pulleys will create an intermittant rachety noise. That one never really concerned me because my '92 Explorer did the same, and it was going strong when I sold it at 173k miles.
hi folks, i have the same issue. 97 f-150 4.6 with an aftermarket cold air set-up. at idle sounds almost like a horn honking and it's coming back out through the air filter element. is this what your problem is?
thanks for the info hang10, i'm going to search this out with my local dealer and let you know. i'm not sure but if the noise seems to be the same on your v-10 vs. my 4.6 it must be in the pcv system or the maf sensor. oh well i'll get back at you soon.
hand 10, i found the intake noise. as the truck was at idle and making the noise i pinched the hose that goes to the idle air control valve (IAC) as listed in chilton book. the noise stoped then the engine stalled, so i removed the IAC from the valve body and cleaned the carbon deposits out of it with some throttle body cleaner, blew out with compressed air and the noise is gone.
it seems that with the deposits on the spring it cannot close all the way. any way thats what i found and did. noise gone bye bye.
even though the repair book says not to try to clean the valve you have nothing to lose, if it still makes noise replace the valve.
good luck with yours. randy
If you mod the box you will get noise, the box is set up to meet federal regulations so eliminator01 you will have more with the cold air setup but as you found all systems need to be working.
Another thought for the un-modded boxes, when it is cold the motor has a warm air recirculation system again thanks to the feds, this helps heat the charge air sooner in order to meat emissions regs. I think the IAC is a part of that system so eliminator01's fix makes sense. Good info!
The 2 holes are in my box as well again I think it has something to do with warm air pick up.
One thing to keep in mind when troubleshooting is always answer this question first. What changed? In this case it was the temp so the next logical step is what is affected by the cold. Go from a to b in a logical progression.

If you pinched the IAC hose, and it stalled, that means it's OPEN and whistling... Cleaning it maybe made it open MORE or more accurately...
