I have a 97 ranger 3.0 and it has a steady Whistling/howling sound. If I open the airflow box the Whistling/howling gets louder and sounds like it is coming from with in the engine. I have sprayed carb cleaner around the intake manifold to checking for leaks but the engine idle does not change. If have noticed if I play around with the tempreture controls in side the sound goes away for a while and that was my quick fix. So far I noticed one other ranger making the same sound.

Has any one heard of this before?

I've heard of something very similar regarding the Idle Air Control (IAC) on other Ford motors. You might want to check it out.
