I have a '02 SD XLT. I've asked two dealers if I can have a replacement keay made at a hardware store. One said yes no problem. The other said no, it has a chip in it and using a hardware store key will lock out the whole truck's computer(I had that happen on a Jeep and now I'm very cautious. The existing key has a black head on it and is fairly slim.
I know mine doesn't. ('02 F350 XLT CC, It has the remote keyless entry group) I just went through this with the remote start guys. To the best of my knowledge the SD series of trucks does not have this anti-theft system, in fact, I don't even think it's a option.
It's an option ,but mine doesn't have it either. The only reason I think it's an option is they show how to circumvent the thing in the insrtuctions for my remote.
For what its worth, our taurus has a chip in the key and the plastic "handle" portion of the key is twice the size of that on the truck with no chip. Based on that, if your key is fairly slim, I would say it doesn't have the chip.

I concur.
If it does have a chip in it,buy the blank from the dealer, have the hardware store grind it,and program it yourself. If it has a chip, the instructions are in the owners manual on how to program it.
My new '03 F250SD XLT just has a plain 'ole Ford key. Made my replacements at our shop on an out of date key machine. My dealer also made me a few keys for nothin'.
