cut dash

Bummer, some previous owner cut the dash in my 66 F100, took out the original radio and installed some piece of stereo trash. How can I get the dash repaired?

Mine was the same way when I got it. I put a metal cutting wheel on my air tool and cut the whole section out of a scrap truck. I then cut the same pattern out of my dash and MIG welded it in. It came out absolutely perfect and undetectible.

Check out any sheet metal shop and get them to weld a piece in there. Any self respecting metal shop or body shop should be able to do that. Just have them weld in the piece and you can grind the welds down smooth. There is a site on the net called Paintscratch.com that can match your paint and put in an areosol can. I got some for my Rangoon Red truck and it looks great.

Isendel,

Instg8r63 gave you good advice, and any flat sheet stock the same guage (thickness) will work fine.

I go to salvage yards & cut roof corners to use for cab corners and all sorts of other pieces & panels with multiple compound curvatures etc. which I piece in as req'd.

If you have no welding experience, I can't tell you enough how very very worthwhile it is to take a welding class at a Community College or VoTech school, Adult Ed evening class!

Some great 110v Portable MIGs are available for under $500 that are more than suitable for the hobbiest & any welding they may need/want to do.

I cut out the radio opening to a nice straight 3" x 6" rectangle. I used a flange tool to recess the edges slightly. Then I took an extra glove box door and cut out a piece matching the shape and curve of the opening...and welded it in. It worked great.

The glove box door is shaped perfect for this job.
