Unhappy problems with E40D

my E40D transmission started acting up and not wanting to shift and then it will start whining. I replaced the filter and put new fluid in it and now it will shift through 1 and 2 fine but when it is suppose to shift to 3rd. it just seems like it binds up and won't let it shift and also it would't accelerate around 30 mph. can anyone give me some info.
Thanks

Does the overdrive light on the shifter flash? If so then your tranny is settingcodes and you obviously have a problem.

In any case I think you have a problem. I also assume you have a fair number of miles on it. So wild guess is you need a rebuild.

But, we don't have enough detail to say better. What year, how many miles, what maintenance, any other symptoms, 4WD, is the fluid level correctly measured?

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

no, the od light does not flash, the only time I seen it flash was when the techometer was acting up but since the tansmission been acting up it never flashed.
It is a 1993 ford f350 diesel and has 127,000 miles on it. I don't know if it had any maintenance before I had it or not but I changed the filter.
The fliud level in right but looking at the dipstick
a machanic told me it coud be a stnking silonoid could this be true?
the wierd thing is it was running fine untill the other day I slowed down to stop and when I went to start out it would go into gear, I messed with it by backing up and then putting it into gear and then it jerked into gear so I made sure the fluid was up and drove it in the driveway a little and was shifting into 1 and 2 fine. when I went to leave I got up the road seemed fine untill it had to shift into 3 and od and it would start whining and wouldn't shift. and when you take your foot off the accel. it doesn't seem to want to drop out of gear.
Sorry so long
please let me know if you need more info.
Thanks

Scott, it sounds to me like you have a drum welded up in it. When it tries to shift to 3rd and binds up that is usually the problem.

When I say the drum is welded up I mean the clutchs and steel plates in it have gotten so hot they welded themselves together. That means the drum will not release so when it tries to shift to third that drum must come off and because its welded together it can't. So its trying to go into two gears at once. Obvisously a problem.

You need to find a reputable transmission shop to diagnose the problem.

Steve
