Question Ford Gold Remote Start Kit ??

Does the Gold Remote Start kit come with the security system or does the description ( http://www.fordgenuineaccessory.com/...G364CA-96&GID= ) just mean it is compatible with the security system. My '01 Excursion XLT 4x4 has keyless entry and panic buttons on the fobs but I don't think this is the same as the security system ( http://www.fordgenuineaccessory.com/...19A361C-6&GID= ). I wouldn't get the Gold system if I also had to buy a $90 security system to go with it (and on top of the $30 Securilock Interface Kit).

TIA,

Ed

While I have the ford gold remote start and LOVE it..

I have the Ford gold system also and think it's great. THere are different versions of the system and you will need to get 2w7z-19g364-aa if you also want the security system and remote start. I like that the system since the stock remotes and keyless entry still work to deactivate the system.

Dont for get installation charges. I am an installer and I install multiple remote starters daily. When people ask me if they can install it their selves I say "if you have to ask the answer is no you cant install it yourself". Installing remote starters is the most difficult task of the car audio / electronics industry. And you need specific tools to install them properly. The most important tool would be a computer safe logic probe / DMM. If you probe into wires with the wrong equipment you can destroy your ECU or deploy an air bag. You also need to have software that tells you the wire colors of everything in the vehicle. Even professional installers can struggle to get it installed in a timely fashion if they do not have this chart.

So I would suggest taking it to a professional installer to have it installed right. Remote starters / alarms are not user installable devices. But if you do install it yourself and you only take one thing from this post, take this: NEVER probe into ANY wire that is wrapped in yellow tape or loom or is going to a yellow connector. Yellow loom, tape and connectors mark the circuit as being an air bag circuit. Also if you have the diesel model, don’t probe into any wires wrapped in red tape or loom for those wires are identified as high voltage circuits. Further more solder EVERY connection. Do not use butt connectors or T-taps.

SPL -

I agree, I consider myself pretty handy and can read most electrical prints, etc.. but would not try to do this myself for sure. However, since have "been there" and in the business, what is a reasonable labor amount to expect (in hours since hourly rates can vary widely). Is it a half-day job, more/less?

If they are reasonable and I know who's doing it, this is something I'd prefer to have the dealer do for future liability, but would like to know ahead of time what real labor times are, approx. Mine is 6.0 PSD, so is that more time than a gasser typically?

Thanks!

I can install a brand I sell in an Excursion in about 4 hours and I am slightly slower then most experienced installers. Excursions are not very difficult vehicles. They are about 4.5 out of 10 where 10 is most difficult and 1 is very easy. So it’s about a half day job. However if someone brings in a brand I have never installed before its going to take at least an additional hour to read the whole manual for the remote starter. Diesel engines can take longer then gasoline engines. Remote starters on diesels need an additional wire. ]

With diesel engines you have to hook up a wire to a glow plug delay circuit (with Astro Start, but maybe not other brands). With Astro Start the brain needs to know when the vehicle says its safe to start turning over the engine. Sometimes you can hook the wire directly up to the light that turns off when you can start cranking, and sometimes you have to find the circuit under the hood. However its only one additional wire out of 30 that needs to be hooked up in the first place. However many remote starters just automatically wait 15 or 30 seconds to turn over and thus this wire is not required. All depends on the brand. But labor should not be much more.
