Lunati Voodoo 256 or Comp XE 256?

I'm looking to swap cams and the valvetrain in my '72 400, as well as slap on a Edelbrock 4bbl intake and 600cfm carb.

I've decided that since this is a daily driver, I should go with a 256 cam, but how do these two compare?

Lunati:
Voodoo Hyd Cam - Ford 351C-400M 256/262 - Lunati Power

Comp:

Thanks in advance.

The reason I'd pick the Lunati is it has a little bit more LSA.

How will the extra LSA effect performance and idle?

The lower LSA number will result in higher peak torque number, more bottom end torque, more narrow power band, lopier idle. From 108-110 you won't notice a difference i bet. My cam is on a 108lsa.

lunati is nice but?

what rocker arms are you a running? if factory will probably run into some valve train issues. the comp cam you can probably run no problems. once you get close to .520 lift valvetrain is a issue! things learned from past experience. actually once over .500 need to really check things over. if block has been machined on deck or heads milled pushrod lenght and rocker to valve wear pattern come into play. catch you later.

once you get near .500 lift you need to check for coil bind and other related valvetrain issues with oem heads and valves. new springs would be nice to help solve possible issues. OEM springs have thicker coils and newer valve springs have a smaller diameter which allows a little more clearance for lift. check rocker to valve tip wear pattern. if block has been decked or heads been milled pushrods might need to be replaced for proper wear pattern on valve tip. things you should know. lunati is a stronger cam like mentioned but comp is nice also but the lift of cam comes into play on your valvetrain potential issues.

I would avoid Comp like the the plague.....it is a typical, corporate owned mass production company.

I've got some Scorpion 1024 rocker arms, and a set of rebuilt heads off eBay that I plan to put Comp/Lunati valve springs in. Once everything is in I'll measure the pushrods and get a set of Comp ones.

just run dyno simulator for the voodoo cam and xe256 cam. comp cam 345 tq @4500 and 337 hp @5500 and the voodoo 447 tq@3500 and 364 hp@5000. If the simulator's right the voodoo is 102 tq more and 27 hp more! Is that possible?

this is with aussie head and tim piston

From the PC standpoint yes, reality, no...because that is based upon advertised duration, not actual ramp design, etc which is proprietary amoungst all cam grinders.

more info. custom cam.

I use www.mpgheads.com get with scott. on the cam grind its possible to gain like you have seen. those 2 cams are different animals because of the rpm range you have and peak numbers. if daily driver then peak numbers don't mean much. what if your normal driving rpms. 2500rpm or 3000 going down the highway. need to pick your cam by your normal driving habits. Also like mentioned ramp rates really alter a cam on how it comes on. especially when showing -negative number on exhaust valve this could be a slower ramp rate and needing more room to open/close. things to learn. catch you later. just did a roller last year and only about .520 lift and ramp rates was tweeked on for my application. time to go, work.

comp cams have a number like -8 or -10 or -12 this one of the numbers on ramp rates. this number will be behind the cam grind number.
