My 5.0/AOD is getting weak. Anybody have suggestions on more power? I'm thinking about a 5.8L but don't know about compatability of computer, trans., etc. If now that route, what can be done to the existing engine during overhaul to get some more horsepower? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Get a mild cam, COMP and Crane both make some nice mild cams that will work without adding a chip.

I purchased a stock 351 long block from Ford and replaced my dead 302 with it. Lots of items changed over, but I did need a new computer. I got the 351 efi intake from a junk yard, reused the wiring harness, injectors, accessories, brackets, etc. Even reused the AOD.

the Probst book on Ford EFI was invaluable in selecting the right electronic stuff and setting up the wiring.

I use mine for towing so It was well worth it.

Thanks for the help. I bought a junkyard 351 which I plan to rebuild. Any tips on cam, pistons, rings, heads, etc. Thanks, again.

No help there. I bought a factory unit.

As for the EFI, what are you running now? bank fire or SEFI? what year vehicle?

Then you are running a Bankfire fuel injection system. The bankfire was run with the 89 351, so all I did was install a new 351 computer and was able to use the whole harness as is.

I picked up a 351 truck EFI intake from the salvage yard, the computer from a dealer, and put all the pieces together. Lots of the stuff swapped over like the radiator, alternator, power steering and the AC compressor. I even reused the AOD after it was rebuilt.

I liked the power gain, even with the factory stock long block. I don't know if there are any differences in the different years of the 351 blocks.

The system is a MAP system, not MAF, so you can search up on mustang upgrades used with the MAP system and apply them to the van. I didn't choose that route; mine is stock. I don't have a lot of insight into what you can and can't do there.

I do recommend the book by Probst, FORD FUEL INJECTION & ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL to help with the wiring. Very valuable.
