Extended Warranties

Not sure where to post this -- anyone have an opinion on extended warranties? I recently found out that for my other car, I could buy it from any dealer anytime in the first year -- that saved me $600. Does Ford offer a good warranty and is there a dealer that can sell it after purchase for cheap?

Are extended warranties Worth it? If you are buying a used vehicle, from my experiences I would say yes. Because you don't know how the vehicle was REALLY treated by the previous owner.
Bought a 1990 ranger with 30k on it in 1992, after 40k Cracked engine Block. Cost to repair without warranty-$ 5,000.00 with warranty $75.00
Bought a 1997 sable in 1999 with 35k at 50k power steering pump went- $ 300.00 without warranty $ 75.00 with. at 90k transmission went Price to Rebuild without warranty $3,200.00 With $75.00. You do the math.....
These were both Ford Extended Service Plans which cost a little more than the other plans you can find on the internet, but there was never any hesitation to fix anything.
Now I have A brand New Ranger, my dealer tells me I don't have to make a decision on a Extented Service Plan untill the very last day or last mile of my new vehicle warranty. From past experiences I will most likely buy one.
Newer trucks and cars just cost to much money to fix now days if something major happens. Other people complain that Extended Warranties are a waste of money, but it is nice not having to come up with $ 500 - $ 5,000.00 when Something goes bad. Just my .02

That is very good information -- that you can buy the warranty anytime during your new vehicle warranty. The second part of the question is if there is bargaining in the price for the warranty. I used to think that the price offered was the real price. Then I purchased a Mercedes Benz and through their forums found out that there was a dealer in Chino California who was selling the $2300 warranty for $1600. One can debate whether or not to buy an extended warranty, but I also want to find out if there is a discount-dealer who can sell it cheaper. In the case of the benz, I got it at $100 over the dealer cost, and it really pissed off the dealer who sold me the car. This lady in Chino has quite a reputation now for selling warranties to people for $700 less than the original dealers. They don't like it but there is nothing they can do to stop it.

Does anyone know of a dealer that has sold extended Ford warranties at less than retail?

thanks
Scott

Thanks for the link. By far a better price than the other sites I found on-line.

I have bought the Ford warranties with all my Fords and the warranties have more than paid for themselves. My used 97 F-150 was the 4.2 V6 that truck got over $7K worth of work done. That was the motor with the failing gaskets that allowed coolant into the motor. My 01 Exploder has had a decent amount of work as well. My recent ride the 01 250 has had some front end issues that were taken care of as well. The other nice thing about the warranties is the rental car is covered by Ford. That helps as well.

I am also fortunate that I have a great service rep at the dealer. If this guy wasn't there and didn't provide the service I get from him I wouldn't have bought another Ford.

Great price on your warranty. What is you deductible at that price?

Did you also purchase your truck from them? The best I can get from my dealer is $1200. for a powertrain warrenty 7/75. I don't drive much so the longer the warranty the better. Could I buy a warranty from Capper Ford without purchasing my truck from them?

THANKS!

Gary

You can buy the warranty wherever you want, independent of where you bought the truck. If you do a google search on Ford ESP you will get several good choices. There is also one listed in a post above which was the best price that I could find.

Keep in mind a few things. Yes, you do have till the end of the 3/36 to purchase a Ford extended warranty, but the start date will always be the day the vehicle was sold new. So, you get 3 years to make up your mind to buy one, but you don't get any more time or miles by waiting. Not to mention that the price could go up- you pay whatever the price is when you buy it, not the price they quoted you 2 years ago. The dealer has no control over Ford raising the price of anything. Also, Ford imposes a $100 fee for any warranty sold beyond 12 months/ 12,000 miles of the original in-service date. If you know for sure you're going to get a warranty, make sure you do it within the first 12/12.

I keep hearing from some people that extended warranties are not worth the $.

I beg to differ.

I bought a new 2000 Expe back in 2000 and recently flipped 45K miles with it. On the return trip directly after flipping, the transmission started slipping gears. Come to find out, the overdrive belts and springs were completely shredded.

My wife and I forgot that we actually DID add the extended warranty to the Expe back when we bought it.

In short, $4000 worth of warranty work only cost me a whopping $50 bux!

You can be certain that I'm going to buy the EW from this point forward!

You can buy from any Ford dealer. You do not have to have bought the vehicle from them. And yes if you have more than 12 months or 12.000 miles on it it will cost you an extra $100.

I just went to Ford Warranty Central. I think it is Cappers Ford and found a Exta Care 7/75 for $1690. Thats the best I could find. Looks good though!
