Doing a trans service, new filter, Mercon V. Not draining the converter. Truck has 189k runs great, trans is perfect, fluid is nice and clean but I did just about everything else to the truck and want to service the trans because I don't know when it was last changed.
Anything I should check while in there? I heard about the OD piston snap-ring breaking and some other stuff to check.

I haven't heard about a problem with the OD piston snap ring. I do know about a problem with the coast clutch snap ring. To check it, all you need to do is take the transmission out of the truck and tear it down. Same for the OD snap ring.

Yea..Uh...No. I might have been thinking about the 4R70 in my F-150 which you just had to pull the valve body. It's running good, I don't want to screw with it,. just looking for easy
If an automatic transmission needs a filter replacement, the transmission is junk anyway. I'm not being rude or snarky, but changing the internal filter is a waste of time and money.
I watched some video on youtube a while back where a guy changed the filter on a C6 as maintenance. That in itself isn't too groundbreaking but the fact that a C6 filter is nothing more than a window screen.......

Wow, crazy stuff eh' ?? I wonder why Ford recommends changing trans fluid and filter at periodic intervals.
The E4OD filter has a ton of internal surface area. Pulling the pan isn't a bad idea just to check for clutch material/metal contamination but to just change the filter.....your call, your $$$$.
While I was at Ford, we had some fleets that we monitored and helped with. One ambulance E4OD was returned to us after the vehicle was totaled in a wreck. The history of the truck was complete, and the transmission had never been serviced. It had 369,000 miles on the original fluid and filter.
Upon teardown, the trans didn't look bad at all. The filter was not plugged. This trans probably would have lasted many, many more miles if the truck hadn't been wrecked.
