Changed the oil yesterday and made a bone head mistake. I pre filled the new filter and forgot so when I went to refill the engine I put a full 13qts in. So it appears I'm a quart over full. I installed a fumoto valve on the drain so it's not much work to climb under with a tube and a quart jug to drain it off. Any harm in leaving it alone or climb under and dump a quart????

 

What does it show on the dipstick? If it’s over the full line I would drain a little off then recheck it. Just hang onto what you remove in case you drain too much off, then you can pour a little more back in. I had to do this the other day when changing my oil… this was my first change with the bypass, so it takes a bit more. After driving it for a few miles it was a little over the full line so I drained about half a quart off and now it’s at the top of the hash marks!

And maybe I’m wrong, but it’s my understanding that overfilling can be a cause for upper oil pan leaks.. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

I'm on my second oil change, first one I run 16.5 quarts with my FS2500 bypass filter still installed (the spin on was huge) and the second I am running 15 quarts with the stock lower oil pan. But I am running the latest oil dipstick on my truck now...

IMO, there is absolutely zero problem with running 14 quarts in your engine.

 

Read through this thread... and go to the end where there is more information.

@ZooDad runs the 23 F650/F750 on his F450 and runs more than 15 quarts in it with the new dipstick.

I have the bigger lower factory pan but have not installed it yet.

 

That thread has gotten a bit longer than the last time I looked at it! Lots of good info.

Like I mentioned, on the oil change I did about a week and a half ago I ended up draining some back out. I started with 1 quart in the oil filter, then I added 13 quarts to the fill tube, however, it was reading at the very bottom of the dipstick. I cranked it and let it run for a bit, then waited a few minutes and checked it again and it was still low, so I added 1 more quart (now at 15 quarts). Checked it again a few minutes later, then it was over the max line... That's when I drove it about 5 miles and rechecked... still over the fill line, so I drained about a little over half a quart off and it was about 1/2 way up the hash marks. I added just a splash more back and it's been sitting at 2/3 the way up the hash marks since. I could add a little more, but at this point I should have a hair over 14.5 quarts in it. Of course I also have the Insane Diesel Bypass, so that is what got me over the standard 13 quart fill. I am just going to leave mine be and check it again along my haul back to MS.


Also, I only have 80 miles on this oil now... it has darkened up some, but to me, it is still lighter color than before I installed the oil bypass. Before the oil bypass, it was darker than this just after pouring it in... then again, 80 miles isn't much... but I am looking forward to see it after a few more oil changes!

my truck has 15 quarts in it now. Good to go with the latest yellow dipstick.

I used to run 14.5 quarts with the old metal dipstick with the FS2500... Here's mine:



If you have 15 quarts in now WITH the ID bypass, and I have 15 quarts in mine WITHOUT my FS2500 bypass, you can definitely run up to two more quarts...

I had 16.5 quarts in mine witn the new dipstick and the FS2500. If I could still get filters for the FS2500, when I installed the bigger F650/ F750 pan, I'd would have run 18.5 quarts... but that's just me...

17 quarts will have to do when I install the new lower pan as the OC25 does not displace as much oil as my FS2500 or the ID bypass due to its smaller size and I will have the bypass installed before the lower pan.

Yes, this is a lot of information to throw at a new 6.7 owner. I understand why you are confused... but due to me and @ZooDad looking into this, you will not harm your engine with another quart of oil in it -- for 14 quarts. I am currently running 15 quarts in my truck...with the new yellow dipstick.

In that link that was provided, there is information about Ford having several different models of oil dipsticks -- with different lengths. The new 23 trucks, got the latest dipstick, part number listed above (it's shorter than the metal one like my truck, and I'll assume yours as well, and it's yellow) so they, the 23 plus 6.7s, could run another two quarts of oil for a total of 15 quarts. That said, those newer trucks have upper oil pans (yes, they changed when it came to galley location and shape, BUT DID NOT change in size physically) >> meaning they are running two MORE quarts of oil with the same size upper and lower oil pans as our trucks; meaning 22s back to the 11s... but with a different oil dipstick >> shorter in length so to accurately measure the additional two quarts.

I surmise that Ford did this because they are now programming the PCM for the 23s to notify the owners to change the oil further out than our earlier trucks. This is probably more oil, than more capacity for the oil to disperse more soot and contaminants further out than say my 16 or your 22... IMO.
