going to buy a 50,000 mile 5.4 lariat tomorow. private sale, no warentee. 20k. are there any trouble areas this truck is prone to? i saw another that was leaking from the pinion seal, this is supposed to be lady driven, garaged, would really appreciate any help. thanks guys.
ps
saw some oil covering the pass side valve cover, i am hoping this was just spilt while changing or topping off, or is there some common problem here?
From what I understand there is a slight weakness in the passenger rear head on the 5.4L motor.... That was just from a local Ford tech I know....wether there's any truth to it I don't know.
I think that Racerguy could answer this question quite well, let's hope he sees this post.
The leak is usually the head gasket. It is quite common. The valve covers gasket very rarely leak so it could be oil from filling it. Take a close look underneath in the area above the starter and you should be able to tell if the head gasket is leaking.
Can you get any service records for the truck?
If it hasnt been done you might want to think about new spark plugs and fuel filter soon. I would probably check the front end to make sure the balljoints are tight. Make sure the transmission shifts ok. If it shudders at all it probably just needs the oil changed. These trucks dont have all that many chronic problems so you probably dont have much to worry about
The price is a little high for the miles, I bought mine,it is a supercab not a supercrew, with 26,400 miles with the remainder of the factory warranty for the same price. Try to find a good lease return, these are usually a better deal.
