MCOM Transmission Issue

Hey all, as most of you know, I have a '64 F100 with the 292 engine and an MX Cruise-O-Matic transmission. After running great for years, an issue with the transmission suddenly popped up two days ago. As I accelerate from a stop, the truck accelerates fine for a few seconds, then the transmission seems to slip. The rpms will jump up to 3000-3500 and it won't shift until I goose it and let off the accelerator. I've been told my intermediate band may need adjusting, so I'll be checking that out today. I've already topped off the atf, as it was just a little low, and that changed nothing. I'm also going to check the vacuum line going to the modulator to see if there are any cracks or even atf in the line. I'll be looking at the modulator to see if it's still good, possibly change that out. Anything I'm missing? Any other ideas about what could be causing this?

MX COM only has a front band and a rear band. No intermediate band. The rear band is the low/reverse band, and the front band is the 1-2 shift control. The later C4 and C6 have intermediate bands.

There is a hole in the floor with a small cover on the automatic trucks that is used to adjust the rear band.

There is a specialty tool used to make the adjustment - the T58L-7195-A shown plus a torque wrench, T-handles and some sockets.

Pictures of the FoMoCo tool T58L-7195-A - this one with a more comfortable handle.

Well, okay then. This might be a job for someone better than me. I've got a guy who worked at a trans shop for 10+ years coming over today to look at it. I'll just leave it alone until he gets here. Thanks for the info, my man. You're extremely helpful and it is appreciated.

So, my transmission. guy came over. We took a ride and he got to experience how the truck was behaving. After returing home, he went under the truck to look it over. He wound up recommending a rebuild. He has a local guy who does good work for a decent price, so the tranny's going to get pulled and sent over to him to get worked over. Said if I were to pull the pan, I'd probably find metal in it. So, that's where I'm at. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

I hope this goes well for you but when my COM was doing the death dance I found the cost to rebuild was more than buying a "good" C6, so that's what I did. Nothing wrong with a COM but they are more complicated than the C6, thus more expensive to rebuild, or so I was told. The C6 was $75 used(1997). Eventually I did have to rebuild the C6, but did it myself and 25 years later, it's still shifting beautifully.
I'm guessing but I would think parts are harder to come by for a COM over a C6 as well. That may be why the C6 was a cheaper route to go years ago.

He has a 292 no C6 with the correct bellhousing. There are adaptor bells to fit C4's to a "Y" block. MODERNIZE YOUR 50
The C4 would be head and shoulders better than a COM considering the expense of a rebuild on one.

@PROSTOCK I've looked at the C4 and an AOD, but the issue is the adapter kits are over $1300. Then there'e the cost of the transmission to take into consideration. The guy who's gonna do my rebuild is only charging me $950 and my mechanic guarantees the quality of his work. This transmission is also the original and does good work for what I need.

If you change to one of the others you might have to change up the transmission cooling system and the driveshaft might need some changes to it also. Kickdown would probably need to be reworked. It's not a direct bolt in with no effort.

Exactly what I found out, @TA455HO . I would definitely have to alter the driveshaft with shortening and a different yoke. I would need to move the crossmember forward and run cooler lines. Then there's the adapter items that would need to be installed and such. Just a lot of work and a great deal of money. I'll take my chances with a $950 rebuild by someone who is highly trusted by my mechanic buddy. He tells me that this guy won't work on anything over 4 speeds. Just doesn't want to deal with newer stuff. I'm down to let him do it.

My bad. I missed the 292 detail.....kinda limits the options.

Staying with what you have is easiest certainly, and it is a fine transmission if working well. If you have someone with the knowledge to rebuild what you have successfully for $950, I'd be down with that too. Let us know how this goes.

I've a buddy with a T-bird with a bad COM and a C6 won't fit (the tunnel is too tight or some such thing). He's at the same spot you are only he is looking at the rebuild himself as he is having issues finding a rebuilder who knows what a COM is!
