Can anyone tell me the actual bolt size used to secure the radiator to the core support? They are a flange-bolt.
I want to find and order longer ones, because I will be spacing back the radiator itself from the support to create a bit more room up-front for an A/C condenser . Thanks.
Yes, dog-point being the unthreaded tip that actually helps get the bolts started and they went to coarse thread to help prevent cross-threading and the speed of installation on the assembly line. Less revolutions to tighten the same length bolt with a coarse thread than a fine thread. They called the washers Lockwasher - external tooth - 3/8" - Once you thread them onto the bolts they pretty much stay put. Sometimes called a Star lock.
My 63 had fine thread bolts holding the radiator in. One of the original clip nuts broke out when removing the original radiator, and I was unable to find replacement fine thread clip nuts. I ordered an assortment of new coarse thread clip nuts. The replacement radiator I bought ended up having the flange at the 6 cylinder location, two inches too far forward. I used 2" thin wall square tube to space the radiator back, and welded brackets onto the 2" tubes for the A/C condenser and the overflow bottle. The whole mess got painted black so it doesn't stand out and look terrible in the engine compartment. I used bolts purchased at the local hardware store.
