i first verified the NSS was bypassed by confirming I could start the truck in gear. Afterwards, I snipped the two wires for the backup lights from that harness with 4 terminals. I then spliced it with the wires from the connector I attached to the transmission.

Thank you everyone for the help. I couldn’t have resolved this issue without you all. Here’s a picture of my truck
To clarify, you have a manual transmission so you don't use the Neutral Safety Switch. That's for automatic transmission only. You have a Clutch Interlock Switch. That switch is located in front of the pedal assembly axle and is closed when you push the clutch fully to the floor. Since you were in gear you surely had the clutch disengaged. It could be that the two switches use the same wiring that eventually gets back to the round connector. I haven't looked at the wiring diagram. It would make economic sense to have two parallel switches on the same circuit. Either one is made and the truck can start. Something to keep in mind to check out as an easy way to bypass the CIS???

Good work getting the backups lit!

Checked the wiring diagram for my 86 6.9l diesel. The switches are not in parallel. They do use the same wire but the switch locations are in series and a jumper wire is used to bypass the unneeded switch. So manual the NSS is bypassed with a jumper and automatic transmission a jumper is in place of the CIS.
