Distributor/oil pump drive problem

I pulled the distributor on my 1990 4.9L/300 L6 engine and the oil pump shaft also came out! I can't seem to get the hex oil pump shaft out of the distributor drive. Has anyone else run into this problem? I can't seem to get the oil pump shaft/distributor drive back down the hole to the camshaft either.

Any advice?

You need to line up the pump shaft and the pump. When you pulled the distributor the pump moved just a little and why it will not drop back in.
Put te
he distributor back in as far as it will go and turn the motor by hand a little till the pump & drive line up and the distributor should fall into place.

Thank you sincerely, Mr FuzzFace2.

I still cannot get the oil pump drive hex shaft out of the bottom of the distributor drive (below the camshaft gear). Is it just stuck in there because of hardened gunk, or is it held in by something mechanical (clip, etc).

Should I just put Kroil down the edge of the hole where the hex shaft goes into the distributor drive, let it sit, tap it a couple of times, repeat, and then try to yank it out?

Please advise.

The distributor shaft has groove with a metal "O" ring clip at the end that goes into the distributor.
Sometimes you have to wiggle and pull hard on the shaft to get it out.
The shaft is intended to come out with the distributor instead of staying in the engine.

Why do you want to take the shaft out?

I also ask why you need to pull the shaft off the distributor?

Use carb or brake cleaner to break down the gunk that holds the shaft to the distributor.

Dave & pmuller:

Thanks for your help. Just a novice here. Yeah, the shaft came out of the distributor. The shaft does have a ring in a "ditch," inside the distrib.

Thanks again,
BSI
