My distributor won't sit flush on the engine block. After much cursing I figured out that what was stopping it was the oil pump drive.
The problem is the hole in the distributor shaft for the oil pump drive is only about 3/4" deep, but it needs to be deeper for the distribuotr to sit flush.
The oil pump, oil pump drive, and distributor are all the oringinal pieces. What's going on?
Can I pull out the oil pump drive through the distributor hole? I've tried pliers, magnets, tweezers. It's pretty deep in that hole.

my guess (and it is a guess at this point but pretty good bet in any case) is your gonna find that the oil pump drive shaft is not actually seated into the oil pump. Take a 1/4" drive socket and extension (use electrical tape and tape the socket onto the extension so as not to lose it into the engine) and reach down there to the shaft and turn it, I am betting it will turn a little then drop down farther, then your dist will sit flush. The other option is are you sure the dist is dropping down onto the shaft, and not just sitting on it, they sometimes can be tricky getting them to mesh up.
Actually the point is suppose to be up so the shaft slips into the dist. easier. There is suppose to be a keeper on the shaft to keep it down in the oil pump. If the keeper slips or is not installed the shaft can ride up out of the oil pump. I never heard of an oil pump drive shaft being to long.
use a 5/16s ( i think ) deep socket on an extension, tape it on like monsterbaby said, and turn it a little bit at a time....it might take a couple tries to get it where you need it to set the dizzy in right...
Update: It turns out the bottom of the distributor shaft was warped and wouldn't accept the oil pump drive. I got a new distributor and it dropped right in.
