I liked my 390 and there are a lot of people saying to keep it. Both are good motors. In my opinion, if you are going to build the 460 there are benefits to the swap. Aftermarket is full of parts for the 460. And 460s are still plentiful everywhere. The FE stopped production in the 70s and I'm sure there are areas of the country where they are still common but that was not the case for me. Most of the junkyards around me scrapped the 70s trucks a long time ago. The inital cost of the swap was a couple thousand but past that now I can readily find aftermarket parts and they are usually in stock and cheaper.
Much like a Harley Davidson. The perfect creation if the goal is turning fuel into noise without the bothersome side effect of power.
Ok, this made me LOL!! So true! Although, I will say, my 2009 Softy had some giddy'up, new rear tire about every 3k miles... it was def peppier than my 98 Softy but still no comparison to my 2015 FZ09 apples n oranges..
It is easier and cheaper to build a high perf 460. but if drag racing isn't the goal it easy to get good power our of a 390.
A '76 high boy is one of the most desirable Ford pickups of this era. the disc brakes and the last year of the FE are why. if it's a half decent rig you'll devalue it far more with a 460 swap than you'll ever save by not rebuilding your 390.
When I bought my '76 it had this 1966 390 2V out of a Mercury in and it was only running on 7 cyl.
And here's the culprit, a totally oil fouled sparkplug in the number 5 cylinder.
A fresh set of plugs, some timing and carb adjusting and it back running on all 8.
265 HP, 375lb/ft of torque and 9.5:1 compression.
It was actually pretty impressive with just how well it ran.
I took my friend that I bought the truck from and he was actually shocked at how good it ran.
The power was pretty impressive.
