I want to swap out my 400 for a 429 out of a 67 thunder bird. Is this a good idea and can it be done with the bell housing from the 400? How do I find out if the engine out of the thunder bird is a 429?
^^This. 68 was the first year. if a 67 then its possibly a 390 or 428 unless its a late build that got a 429.
If its is a 429, it will fit the 400 bell if you use a diaphragm clutch and a internally balanced 429/460 flywheel I think. The 400 clutch and fly wheel will not work. Clutch pattern is different and the flywheel is the wrong balance. You will also need swap mounts and 460 truck manifolds or 429/460 swap headers, 460 4x4 truck pan/pickup/dipstick and possibly some different front accessory brackets.
Thanks for the info. I called the guy who owns the car and it turns out the engine is a 428 he said he must of hit the wrong button when he text me the info. Im a little bummed out. But I think that engine is just as good and will work out. thanks again
Nothing wrong with a 428, great engine. You'll need an FE bell housing and 76- back F-150 FE frame stanchions to make it fit your 79. I don't know if F-250 "High BOY" narrow frame stanchions will work as your 79 is wide frame. L&L might make what you need.
