1964 f100, short bed, 223 six. Three speed manual. Two wheel drive. 95% original, 56k Sahara tan I believe, nice solid frame body.
two issues:
1. fuel pump leaks. Third in 2 years. I only use non ethanol, appears to leak around the bulb gasket. Thoughts on why? Not cheap imported pumps..$73.
2. oil filter was converted to spin on by prior owner, now drips. Removed, installed new spin on plate with new gasket. Still Drips. Removed and coated gasket with black sealer, still drips. Tried new filter, still drips. Drips during and after run. Not a lot..maybe 5-6 drips after being parked. Coming from that area..not above the filter. Thoughts?
another question…vinyl seat is original with ford embossed emblem. Seat is starting to separate at seams. Repair did not work. Possible to get identical covers? Tan.
For most thin paper gaskets I like to use Permatex Aviation sealer; completely coat both sides then hang them and let it tack up before installing. Both parts to be bolted together need to be perfectly clean, rust free, burr free, and totally free from any oil residue. For thicker cork/rubber gaskets I prefer Ultra Grey rtv on both sides, assemble very loosely then snug the bolts down all the way the next day. The top half of the engine in my truck was sealed that way 23k miles/4 years ago (haven't pulled it to do the pan gasket yet) and the valve cover, block, and head are so dry that they're rusting.
Have you tried snugging down the screws on the fuel pump halves?
SMS Fabrics has the original embossed seat covers, or the insert material and vinyl with the embossed logo if you want to get your own upholstery shop to make the cover. They're not cheap, and not fast, but afaik they're the only one with the correct embossed panels.
Thank you. I did meticulously clean the block where the brand new oil plate installs. Coated both sides of the gasket with the black sealer then did install, left it for 24 hours. Drips. It really is a thin gasket. I wonder if I can make a new thicker fiber one. As for the fuel pump, I tightened all the screws around the bulb and the two into the block still wet with gas.
The thin gasket may be contributing to the problem. Another thing people often do it torque the adapter too tight. The directions provided with this kit says just 25 ft.-lbs. torque. It also talks about seating the gasket well by turning the plate. It's been a while since I held it, but it seems like the gasket was not all that thin. More of a black fibrous material. Is your new plate and gasket NOS or aftermarket?
If a non-orgional FORD KIT (NOS) (shown in ILL above) was not used and the kit was CHI-COM, the plate is of thinner gauge and will warp while tightening.
The plate has to be straightened and a quality gasket used, sealed as described above.
So…yes I torqued the nut to 25 ft pounds. Originally the oil was definitely coming from the bottom of the old plate. Now I see the drip running along the bottom side of the filter. What I now did…against my better judgement..was to go beyond hand tight on the filter..not crazy but maybe an inch. That seems to have helped but will keep an eye on it. It COULD be the seam of the filter housing..not sure. Will watch but I did order a different brand filter so if there continues to be a drip I will replace the filter.
as mentioned my third fuel pump in three years is leaking. I did buy a $73 Delphi filter but will return that and decided to order a precision filter from o Reilly which has an unlimited warranty as opposed to a 12 month Delphi warranty . I do use non ethanol. Will see.about that too.
lastly the original bottom seat seams are cracking and now has a couple rips. SMS auto fabrics will match the original…$600..yikes..just for the bottom! But this truck is in such prime condition I want to stay original as possible as opposed to a Walmart seat cover. The only non original parts are the hub caps which are sourced from a 49 ford and I installed electronic ignition as well as a couple of seat belts. Truck runs and handles great for 62 years old..has 56k original miles. Hope this is all for a while!!!
