Cold start, glow plug question

On my 2006 F250 SD 6.0L, I've had a cold start issue that was rapidly growing worse. Long story, I'll post in another thread, but I have key questions:

My Questions:
  • When starting cold, If I leave the key on after the dash curly-q-light goes out, does the glow plug continue to heat, or is the heater now off?
  • If I want to get the glow plugs a little hotter, should I leave the key on, or turn it off and then run thru the curly-q-light sequence again?

The light goes out when you can start it. The glow plugs can stay on for a while, so no point playing with the key. Check the battery voltage, it stays low until the glow plugs go off and climbs quickly to 14V.

If I remember correctly on my 99 - 7.3, the Glow Plugs are NOT necessary over 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, it is my understanding, when the light goes out on the dash for the Glow Plugs "heating", that you need to immediately turn the key OFF, then "Re-Cycle" the key again.....and pump the pedal once or twice to inject a little fuel, so it can be "heated", on the FIRST cycle, and I always hit it once more, when I have determined the LAST cycle as well when I attempt to start the truck.

I was in Denver in Jan 2025 and it was *0 degrees*, I did NOT plug in my truck, but "Cycled" my key 10 straight times, and my old 7.3 actually started..........

Not sure if this applies to the 6.0 diesel, but I assume it is similar.

Goodl Luck!
