On my 2006 F250 SD 6.0L, I've had a cold start issue that was rapidly growing worse. The problem started with exterior temps at 25F... then cold start at 30F, then 35F, etc... over a few weeks, it got really bad, afraid I'm draining my batteries too much to start at 50F exterior temps. I took the truck to Ford, shop technician tested codes... 1 bad glow plug & Glow Plug Control Module not meeting specs on voltage output... Ford installed a new GPCM and a new glow plug.
The Test... When I cold started this morning (it's 44F outside), the little curly-q dashboard light comes on for 8 seconds, as usual... it started this morning on first try, but turned over more times than normal (normally starts on 4th revolution... it took about 8 revolutions to start). My Questions: If I leave the key on after the curly-q- light goes out, does the glow plug continue to heat, or is the heater now off? If I want to get the glow plugs a little hotter, should I leave the key on, or turn it off and then run thru the curly-q-light sequence again?
We are travelling across country, our Four Wheel Camper on the back, about to head into a series of National Forests for off grid camping in NM and AZ... don't want to head into the wilderness worrying about cold starts!
Might be wrong forum, and I don't know if he's going to check it, but I would check the condition of the batteries first. If it's turning over slow, there's a good chance the batteries are getting weak.
