Hola, amigos! Just signed up.
Seeking some advice/insight/etc.on my 6.0 project ('06 F250) Scenario: I noticed no issues but conducted a once-over before heading out of town. Noticed grey sludge in degas...so much for taking the truck! I'm deep into the valley with the cooler removed and new one on way (USA version.....-CA number). Since I'm elbow deep in this, I'm updating where feasible. I removed the radiator to have it hot tanked but since it's OE, that won't work. ~$200 in labor for shop to clean out thoroughly and it has ~225K miles on it, so I'm upgrading to a Mishimoto rad. I'll put on new pipes, hoses, pump, etc. My big issue is the HPOP. I don't think there's an issue. I pulled the IPR and it looks good other than a few small solids. Screen looked good from my perspective. (BTW, who ever installed the IPR wrenched way too tight. Took a pipe wrench, for Pete's sake!) This is a reman longblock truck installed in '14. I looked at the itemized invoice and not seeing a HPOP listed so apparently the old HPOP was transferred. As mentioned, there are ~225K miles on the truck minus the longblock. Bite the bullet for a new HPOP since i'm that deep into it? I'm thinking the River City Thump 1 HPOP if i do. Or, upgrade the STC fitting (assuming it needs it) and the IPR and call it good.
Just curious why you feel the need to replace the HPOP? Was it under performing? The ‘05 and up design is pretty solid. Are you sure the sludge is coming from the oil cooler? Did you pressure test it? What were the deltas? Did you pressure test at the degas bottle to ensure the head gaskets are good? EGR cooler? As far as the new oil cooler you bought, it is 99% going to be the Chinesium version. Motorcraft doesn’t have the USA version anymore, they sold all remaining stock of the good ones to BPD and a few other places. They do however still sell the USA gasket kit. You would do well to pitch the Chinesium gaskets that came with the oil cooler and buy a gasket kit from a reputable Ford parts dealer. The oil cooler itself will be ok-ish, but the gaskets that came with it are known to leak. Crappy parts is just another battle we are facing from Ford on these engines.
There’s lots of information on all this and more in the 6.0 section of the forum. You should repost over there and get answers from the most knowledgeable folks who have been there done that.
