help

Hello all I'm brand new to this and need help! so I bought a few years ago what we call in the N.E. a yard truck basically an old snowplow truck just to do your driveway. The truck is a 1996 ford f-250 Xlt 5.8L 8cyl. I have been trying to get someone to fix it as it has always been leaking oil from behind the oil cooler. I am currently looking for a replacement oil cooler but haven't had any luck I bought a whole kit with the radiator etc.... but the oil cooler does not look the same the 1 I have is square on the side with the 2 connections on it. I have had some people tell me just bypass and delete it, but I would rather, if possible, find the correct oil cooler and or the correct gasket that goes behind it as I'm sure it's just the gasket is junk. I don't know anything about mechanics, but I am trying to learn but had no luck and I'm also trying to figure out how to use this site at the same time....HELP PLEASE!!! The biggest problem is finding parts for this truck Now I can find what looks like the same oil cooler but it starts at 1997 and goes up would this 1 work for my truck or does anyone out there have any thought or know where i can buy the correct oil cooler? please any help at all would be great as I have been staring at this truck in my driveway for 2 years now and everytime it snows im irritated that i cant get this done. Thanks for taking time to read and hopefully reply
this is what my oil cooler looks like only silver in color

I buy a lot of my parts from LMR.com
I think your engine block and oil cooler system should be the same as lightning. I’d look there

The lightning cooler is not the same as the stock 5.8 cooler.

The last time I looked for one it was unobtanium. Delete or go aftermarket.

This is what my buddy used on his '95 F250 5.8 4x4 From a Perkins Diesel. I'll have to find what oil filter he had to use...

Bend the tab on adaptor out of the way & unscrew from block.

You'll need to unscrew nipple with correct allen wrench from adaptor & engine block.

Put the one that will screw into an FL-1A filter back in the block.

Buy a new regular 5.8 lower radiator hose & put it on.

If all you're doing is plowing in winter, an oil cooler is not first priority.

You can chase the cooler parts later if you desire.

You would use a FL820S or equivalent with the cooler.

Given the potential downside of failure i would not use a no name ebay replacement for this part. That's an opinion.

LMR —> Late Model Restoration

1st Generation Ford Lightning

but R&RFord said that won’t work.

There is no point in looking at those listings. Engine size is not the same. They are not even the same engine family. What you have linked is for 1997-2002 F-Series and E-Series with a 5.4L engine. You have a 5.8L / 351W engine in your truck.

The pic I posted is exactly what is in your truck.

What I described is how to ditch the cooler & use a standard full size filter.

There is no gasket once you remove the cooler, it's replaced by the gasket on the filter.

As pointed out in post#13, the coolers you're looking at are wrong.

Deleting the cooler is not that complicated & mechanic should be able to delete the cooler & change the lower radiator hose in under 2 hrs, 1 if they're good.

It's not that hard if you have the correct size allen wrench

If you pulled a trailer 5 days a week a cooler might do some good, but as a plow truck used a couple times a year, it's really pointless chasing this repair for the possible payback vs spending.
