Dropped the transmission today primarily to replace the torque converter. Did it on the ground with a floor jack and ratchet straps. Not too bad. Took me about 2 hours to drop it. New converter arrives Monday.
Can any of yall tell based on these pics, if this is the original vs reman tranny? How about the converter?
Interesting how the down pipe is squished and egg shaped. Seems to be same overall volume as the rest of the pipe, just squished vs circled. Correct?
I plan to remove and check the pump, replace seals and rear main while this is out but unless something obvious shows up telling me to go deeper, I’m not planning to.
That's not normal. If that's part of the pump (top pic) then you'll want to replace the pump. Stand the trans on it's tail (pump facing up) Unbolt it, but don't pry against the case to push it out! You'll SNAP that aluminum cross base right off, ruining the whole trans! Instead, since you wont have the proper tool, place a large screwdriver against the valve bodies behind the pump (with pan and filter out) and use that to pry against, to push the pump out.
Replace it with a reman pump from ebay. Look for a '95 pump. It will have a "F-5" casting #.
You'll need a pump seal kit too...at least the gasket.
Pluck the seal out and take another pic first. Converter looks normal but don't worry about that. You already know that is shot (from 2 previous threads you posted). If you were to cut it open you'd probably find the problem; bent or lose vanes.

If you don't understand my instructions, don't risk it. Get the puller.
Don't pull the pump with the trans laying like it is, parts will fall out...and they are very,very,very hard to align and put back in. All you really need to do it tilt it up. Set something under it like a tire w/ rim so it's tilted up.

that almost looks like someone tried forcing the trans onto the engine without the converter fully seated into the pump.... then realized what they were doing, and did it properly before destroying the pump .
Thank you sir. Can you tell me what is different about the F5 pump? I've been watching a 16 video class/series on rebuilding the entire tranny. I'm leaning that direction while I have it out but don't want to waste money. She shifts firm between gears. Has been slow to engage in reverse just recently but otherwise shifts "normal" except for the TCC being shot.

The F5 pump is higher volume. It pumps more fluid through the trans, helping it lube and cool better. It's one of the (many) upgrades of 1995 spec. If you just want to limp this trans along for a bit and want to save some $ you can use another '89-94 pump. It's not like they're "bad". I mean look how long that one lasted, right? During a reman, you should upgrade. Pluck that seal to make sure its the pump that has that crack first though. It's tough to see. I'm pretty sure it is, and I bet Tom is right, I bet that's just what happened at some point.

It wasn’t the seal but I don’t know what it was. I never noticed it until I zoomed in on the photo. Perhaps it was a reflection or just a figment of my imagination. We’ll find out soon enough. New converter, seal, and fluid all arrive tomorrow. Wish me luck getting this big girl re-installed with just a floor jack. She’s not light.

You don't see a rip in the seal? Sure looks like one, now that I see it again with you saying it's not inside. Just looks like a rip. If it was, it must have been a pretty good size leak though. Well anyway, as long as it's not there anymore, all is good haha. Good luck getting it back together.

Thanks again. I believe I will use an angle grinder to open up the old converter before one install this tranny just to make sure there is a smoking gun. If there isn’t, I’ll pull the pump and rebuild the tranny before re assembly. Stay tuned for converter internal pics. 😁

Well crap. It was the best of times and then the worst. Installed the new converter, wrapping the job up around 4am this morning. Filled it with fluid and went for a test-drive for about 20 miles and was super happy b/c there was zero converter clutch slip. Then, as I pulled back into my subdivision, I had no pull at all and RPM's increased and she puked all of the new fluid out the new front seal. I was able to nurse it home, barely, but either I screwed something up or the transmission just gave up the ghost entirely.
Looks like I'm pulling the tranmission out and replacing or rebuilding it. I wish I understood these things more and had more condfidence that it would be GOOD if I rebuild this myself. I've been watching this video series and can follow these instrucitons for sure but I don't know what I don't know.... Suggestions? Does this even make sense? What would cause it to puke the fluid out the brand new "national" brand front seal after converter replacement? If I rebuilt this, will I be okay to use this new converter of it is toast since it was on the truck when this happenned?
Was it overheating? Did you overfill it? Put enough fluid back in it, to top it back up and unhook the cooler line that goes into the radiator, that comes from the front of the trans. Have someone start the truck......does fluid pump out of the line?
If so, hook that back up and unhook the line at the rear of the trans, have someone start it again, does fluid pump out from that line?......Actually just start with this one. This will tell if you the cooler lines and cooler are clean and pumping all the way back, if not, then try the first line mentioned.
The good news is, the converter fixed the issue. You just need to figure out why the seal failed. If it overheated, it's just temporary.
The bushing can fail and walk forward, causing the trans to puke but I checked your pics and it's good, plus it leaks full time when that happens.
