Hello,
I have a 2014 F250 6.7. I got the standard message that I had 500 miles to fill the DEF tank or I would be limited to 50 MPH. I was on a trip and didn't refill it until I got home. It was showing about 100 miles then. After refilling I drove it around but it didn't reset. It's now showing 10 miles until I will be restricted to 50 mph. Any ideas what might be the problem and how I can fix it. Thanks
There was a warranty extension for faulty DEF sending units. But I suspect your truck is too old to qualify at this point. Try a google search just to be sure.
I had that happen to mine once; it gave me the 500 mile warning, but took less than 2 gallons to refill. Luckily mine did reset after a refill and a couple of restarts. I searched online and found some forum threads that suggested this could happen if you top off your def tank when it isn't nearly empty. Apparently it confuses the sending unit. Supposedly you're supposed to wait until you get the warning before you fill it. Not knowing this at the time, I had topped mine off when it was still more than half full. I haven't done that since. So far, so good.
If it hasn't reset after a couple of restarts, you're probably going to have to take it to a dealer or a good independent diesel mechanic. Or maybe try replacing the sending unit yourself.
I have a 2015 and I’ve had that as well once, other times it was ok. I filled up when the warning showed up and it didn’t reset. In the end I disconnected the batteries and waited for a while and IIRC it reset itself shortly afterwards. I then dumped a bottle of DEF cleaner into the tank and I’m waiting for the next warning.

similar resolution for me, disconnected the batteries while I was at work and it sorted itself out
Not sure what weather is in your area but if its cold/frozen it will read incorrectly until it thaws out, that being said I know some of the earluer models had heater issues.....
My 2017 likely has a different DEF algorithm but when I got the low DEF warning and added a jug of DEF it didn't reset. It took a few ignition restarts to get it to clear.
