Lightbulb interior makeover

So I am going to do a little interior makeover on my 77 F150. Keeping the Dark Jade and Tan but add to it, I bought an embossed western floral vinyl upholstery for the door panel inserts and headliner, also thought about using it for the dash pad. I was curious for the doors if anyone has installed some type of storage like a map pocket or cup holder style to the bottom of the doors. I drive back and forth to work with a coffee and need someplace to store my tumbler. I have the slide in cup holder that inserts where the ash tray goes but they are only good for cans of bee....soda.. yeah soda. Tumbler does not fit and it also shakes like crazy..... Looking to do something similar to the bottom pic (those are for a jeep) that I can wrap with the same upholstery, if anyone has any ideas. I also thought about making something out of wood. I have been searching custom door panels and universal door storage pockets, but haven't found anything that has sparked my interest.

I believe those are called “road sodas”….

Coincidentally the person that I’ve seen post up most recently about home made door cards and custom mods is Tbear. He’ll probably jump on this thread tonight. You should ask him about cup holder options, and also his take on road sodas. I’m sure there’s a few interesting stories there. If I was better at this stuff I’d tag him in the post but I’m not a rocket surgeon.

I’ll try to remember to take a picture later when I’m out there, but I made a simple water bottle holder that’s screwed to the dash (sorry purists). It’s a piece of large aluminum angle, with a 3/4” x 1/8” flat bar bent around in a hoop, and some extra spark plug wire split down the middle for edge guard.

It just clears the shifter, and is a decently central spot for the right hand. I had already put the two screw holes there years ago for a mounting spot for my EFI handheld, so

Bonus shot, also showing my killer Bluetooth sound system.

I do recall seeing a hot rod garage episode where Lucky made cup holders out of oversized stainless cups he got off the Amazons. I think it was a center console for his Chevelle or maybe a gto?

Ive also considered what you’re planning, but its lower on my list at the moment.

Tbears door cards/panels seem like a good option to mount to, without hacking up factory sheet metal or overly expensive (to replace) original parts.
You could even use some plex or acrylic sheet as a backer (won’t rot/rust, offers a little flex, and can act as a thermal barrier), and then put nut inserts in the door panel clip mount holes.
It’d allow you to attach anywhere on the door without having to reach down to where the map pockets went.

"Road Sodas" ..... new one on me.I just stumbled in, and Wife is waiting on me to cool down and get ready to take her up the road, supper, etc. I will come back this evening, but in the mean time here is a link to my door panel thread.

D I Y door panels ... again - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

I will point out that I did have pockets down low, and while they were pretty basic, they could not be seen with a shut door, but the killer was hitting a knee getting out of the truck in a hurry concentrating on something else. They are still hidden with shut doors, but are higher up and sized to hold a 3 cell Mag light if carried. I put the Mercury GM bucket seats in long ago, there is a center 4" wide filler console, two SS cup holders (they have lips so they drop into bigger holes, one fits larger cups), a secret locking pin hidden for the between seat storage, and behind seat storage. I have grab handles, and I made a flat like hump tray like top.

I used to have a cup holder that slipped in with the window. It was a piece of plastic to get it past the window, then fabric to follow the contour of the door, then a cup holder. Doing a quick internet search didn’t bring up anything like it, just all plastic types.

If I was going to make one, I’d probably use strong magnets to attach it just above the plastic door panel. Maybe recess the magnet and cover it with felt or something that wouldn’t scratch up the door.

I envy you. I can’t wait for the day I can drive it to work with a cup of coffee. The way I'm going I might be retired by the time I get the truck on the road again.
