Hello friends I have a 82 f100 302 im trying to change the alternator but the bottom bolt is giving issues and how do I get the belt off thanks in advance.
You will have to cut the belt, and then take a hacksaw or sawzall and cut the alternator bolt. However you can get to it. Sorry, this is a Ford thing and is very common. The alternator bolt corrodes to the hole in the alternator. It is usually not possible, but if you can take the whole engine bracket off with the stuck alternator on it, you can take it to the workbench and try to get it out.
Just wait till one day when you have to change the waterpump. It can all happen again with the waterpump bolts, and you might have to get a new timing cover. They do sell them at the local stores.
Times two on the penetrant. PB or whatever you have. And if time permits apply two or more times per day. Vibration helps to work the penetrant into the threads. If you have an impact drill or drill with the hammer mode chuck up a socket and while applying penetrant vibrate it in with the impact or drill. Don't need to break it, just shake it...I have done that routine for a week and more but eventually you can often win with patience and persistence.
I bought a impact ratchet and gonna try that the alternator was changed towards the end if 2025 from what the kids said but I think the bad battery and the cold killed it so it should give it had a little give but the position of it makes it awkward to put some strength into but what about the belt I don't see a tensioner or its just hidden.
what about the belt I don't see a tensioner or its just hidden.
If your arrangement is like my '84 351W, there is no separate tensioner. There's a long bolt at the top on which the alternator pivots. At the bottom, there's a short bolt with the head facing aft. This bolt passes through a slotted adjuster bracket. To find this bolt, you've got to feel for it by Braille from underneath. Loosen this short bolt and then you can move the whole alternator left and right to adjust belt tension.
Not sure if your 82 is the same, but here's that slotted piece.
im working on that bolt now but its being stubborn is it reverse cause this thing feels like it gets more loose when I crank it right instead of left im using pb blaster and a breaker bar
