I've got an '88, 2.9L. Went out this morning to start the truck, no start just clicking. Anyway I put the charger on it and checking aroun I notice the alternator belt is slack. I've got the bolts to the alternator loose but I can't get it to pivot up to tighten it. Is there a trick to this or am I just to dumb to figure this out?
On my 87 2.9 I also had to loosen the lower bolt of the alternator just a bit and then I used a long screwdriver or a pry bar in order to get the alternator to start to pivot.
I think there might be a square slot in the alternator front for a 3/8" breaker bar to fit in. Put one in there and use it for leverage to tighten up the belt slat.
Well I managed to tighten the belt up. I think that the problem was the bottom through bolt wasn't loose enough to pivot the alternator. After charging all night the battery was up to 14 volts so I tried to crank it up and all I got was 1 rev and then a bunch of clicking. I checked the solenoid by jumping the post with some pliers and got another rev but I couldn't hear any clicks. AnywayI think my starter is gone any thing to I should be aware of changing it out?
Thanks everyone for your replies, I appreicate it.
