I am in the process of doing the same thing, adding the Dome light using the stock F-100 headlight switch. As you mentoined on the stock unit there is a tab connector that is fused for the dome light. But since I am lazy, I am just going to add an inline fuse and take it off the Batt terminal of the ignition switch. I might change that plan if I find one could turn the dome light on by twisting the stock headlight switch all the way clockwise. But I am not sure the stock units are capable of that in 56 or earlier years.
About using a GM style headlight switch. Yes you should be able to do that. We just need to know what the switch looks like
Better yet the year, and model of the car it was used with.

If using the GM headlight switch you could connect one leg of the dome light to a 12 volt fused source. Then run the other leg to the door switches and the dome light terminal on your GM headlight switch. The other terminal on your door switches would then be grounded. Each switch would simply ground the circuit turning on your dome light.

When I rewired my truck, I ran a power line to the light and used standard ground door switches.

It's so much simpler and safer that way. I'm pretty sure that GM light switch would be set up that way, as a ground switch and not a power supply.

Yes, I used a GM switch. I moved the **** from the factory switch to the GM switch handle too.
