12v is twice the power but half the amperage. The existing wire should be fine as long as it doesn't have missing cover. I second the book recommendation. I went an odd way, I ordered a 6vdc alternator. Had to change from negative to positive ground. The starter, etc doesn't care. No need to change them. Look here:
