I disassembled the oil pump on the weekend and ran it through my ultrasonic cleaner. As you can see below there are some scratches on the gears. I don't believe this is anything unexpected and my plan is to clean them up a tiny bit and reassemble. Just wondered how others approached this situation.
It looks useable to me, but you might want to check length of gears, endplay, and for wear in the housing floor. For sure, some metal or other hard particles have been through it, but you've cleaned it all out. The inner / outer gears don't seal to each other, they are just really close at one point as they maintain a thin layer of oil as they create a vacuum and then compression of oil, those scratches I see won't matter. I'm sure you cleaned / examined the pressure relief spring & valve. Just lube it all at reassembly to prime it. Look close at driveshaft and socket ends.
A few scratches? Those are deep Gouges! Deep enough to significantly lower the oil pressure. I'd never consider using that oil pump. But that's not the end of it. There's been a lot of large chunks of metal, and / or hard carbon run through the entire oiling system. The rod, main, and camshaft bearings are surely badly scored, as will be the crankshaft and camshaft journals. Cylinder walls, and piston skirts will probably look just as bad.
Hi Ranger
Interestingly, I did not find this damage on the crank or cam so was surprised to see it in the oil pump. Like we both know, when grit/metal etc etc gets into an engine it's usually engine-wide. The crank and cam are smooth, can't catch a fingernail on them anywhere and while the bearings on the crank are well worn, they too are smooth. I have no history on this truck aside from knowing it was stored in a heated garage since 2001 and didn't move from there till I bought it. I drove it around my property and it had the classic oil leak at the rear main thus our tear apart-rebuild decision.
