Hi guys
Could I get some advice on priming the oil pump before I reinstall the engine. Its a 360 on a stand and Ive read some on the subject. The pump and pan are installed and its sitting uprite on the stand. Im thinking I should dump in some oil and hook my cordless up to the shaft and pump some oil. Just want to make sure its working before I install it? Oh and counterclockwise?
thx
Yes to counterclockwise as you look down onto the engine. Assuming you're using a socket and extension I like to tape the two together. I like to remove the valve covers and make sure oil goes to all rockers. If oil doesn't come out of each rocker then stop and figure out why. Don't forget to install your oil filter adapter and a filter. You might want to remove the filter before dropping into the engine bay so it's not there sticking out. If you have one, you can hook up an oil pressure gauge and spin the drill until you get 40 or 50 psi.
Ok thx 65, Valve covers are already installed so i guess ill just do the pressure test. I dont have one but ive seen them anywhere from $34 to 134. Is there anywhere to listen or look for to make sure its pumping?
Going off memory here but I believe there is one unique rocker arm bolt on each side that must be in the correct hole to allow oil flow. Also, (hope someone will correct me) I think the rocker shaft can be installed upside down. So I nudge you to peel off the valve covers for the oil flow check.
For oil pressure gauge, since you don't have a tester, might consider (and I nudge you here too) to get a gauge to mount on your dash or steering column, etc. It can tell you if you spin a bearing or something else so you know to shut down your engine before bad news happens. My kit came with an abrasion resistant pressure hose. It takes the place of the idiot light.
Another oil check that guys like to do on a fresh engine is after a few hundred miles change the oil filter. Cut open that first oil filter and make sure there's not lots of scary stuff. A few metal bits is normal but you don't want a filter full of it.
Hey thx 65,
well this isnt a total rebuild more or less a re-seal. the engine didnt even have a single noise out of the question when it came out, I just got sick of cleaning up oil off the truck and driveway! Nothing has been touched within the block other than the rear main which was a piece of cake on a stand. I just forgot about priming the pump which wouldnt have worked upside down anyway?
