Wondering if a 460 Zf5 swap would be a good fit? I want to somewhat daily this truck but Wondering if it would be better to keep the 4 speed and 390 and build it or a built 460? Any help is appreciated, its a 72 F150 4x4
I am in the final stretches of a 69 F100 swapping in a 460 with a 4R60 transmission. Not exactly what you are considering but sort of similar. What are you trying to improve on? I would not even think about it unless you can get a 460 with all the accessories and brackets. A bit of me wishes I would have just rebuilt the very tired 360 and C6. I am sure once its up and going I will get what I wanted. But there are a ton of extra parts needed. Like the engine mount towers.

How did you post a profile picture? I've wanted to but I can't find out how.
In the upper right of the webpage you will see a little gear. That is settings. Click it. That will bring you to your user control panel. On the left look for and click "edit avatar". There are a couple of rules to follow. But from there you can upload whatever you like.

Thanks! And sorry to the op for hijacking his thread I'll shut up lol.
I am on the fence with this one. Is your 390 a running motor that needs a re-fresh? Is the 460 a rebuild and has the trans been gone through? I did the total rebuild on my 390, now most of my parts were acquired quite a while ago when they were easy to find. The biggest advantage is that overdrive in the ZF. That being said, I believe there is a fair amount of floor work that needs to be done to fit that ZF5. So for simplicity, rebuild the 390 and drive it for another 40 years!
Another option would be rebuild the 390 and put an OD unit on the back of the factory 4 speed. It was an option for me on the back of my C6. Knowing what I know now I wish I would have rebuilt me engine and trans, then put an OD unit on the back of the C6. With what I now know I would have everything I wanted and I believe been a few bucks ahead.
Not much better out there than a 7.5 with a ZF 5 speed (new Raptors and Shelbys maybe) (like to see one of those get un-stuck up sliing)
1997 was the last of them, We had tons of people come down and buy 97 F250's because they were afraid of the new ones
The 98 and newer modular plants are a whole another bag of worms they thought, pulling the cab and crap like cam chain tensioners
I agree, give me a 460 any day, but I do like driving my 5.4
I put a 7.5/ZF S5-42/BW1356 combo in a 67 F-250 4x4. Ended up modifying the cab crossmember, floor and a 1” body lift. In a 2wd, it may be possible to not do floor work or body lift. The bellhousing was super tight against the cab before the body lift, however.
