Bronze is a little harder than the Babbit type bearing used for the cam, crank & rods, so I dont think I would use a file in non-trained hands but that's just me.

When you press the new gear onto the new camshaft be careful not to break the thrust plate.

It looks metal to me or do you mean bend it?

They are cast iron, pretty hard and they can break very easily.

You just have to be careful how you support the camshaft and keep checking to make sure that you're not bearing on or catching the thrust plate in some way. A Chevy 6 cylinder is almost exactly the same.
