Are 360 and 390 pistons interchangeable? I thought they were different but an ebay ad indicates that the same piston will fit either engine although there is a distinction between different years.
most 360's came with full length pistons, most 390's came with skirted pistons due to the crank being longer in the 390. to allow the crank to past the piston freely
When you say most pistons in 360s had a full skirt and most 390s were partial skirts to clear the crank I guess my 360 pistons could be used in a 390 if they had partial skirts. What year 360 engines had partial skirts? Would my '76 1/2 F250, 360 pistons have full or partial skirts, i.e. could I simply install a 390 crank and rods to turn it into a 390?
360 pistons have a compression height of 1.776", 390 pistons are 1.680". Both pistons have a deck clearance of over .100" in the hole. Somebody with a calculator might want to see what your new cr would be but it's gotta be better than what you have now.
im in the process of doing that 390 crank and rods attached to 360 pistons in a 40 over 360 block vresion myself . its a 76 block and pistons and a 75 crank and rods i did a mockup to make sure nothing would hit it if the 360 hadnt had the skinny rods i would have thought it was a 390 because the pistons were exactly the same except for a small divit in the face of the 360s and they were 40 over. if all goes well ill have it in and running sometime tomorrow. my reason for doing it this way wasnt a choice but a necesity. when i get it runnung il post with the results and or problems, good luck with yours, bob
