I have a 2000 4wd Excursion. For the last 3-4 weeks At idle the SUV seems to surge or Loap at Idle when in drive or in park.
It is NOT the IAC valve . That item has been replaced by the shop it is at. Nothing shows up on the shops computer. My check engine light does not come on for the shops computer to detrmine what item is bad. The check engine lite does work if you are wondering.
does anyone have a suggestion to help me out. The Truck has 44,000 miles and is in great shape other than the rough , surging idle
the engine is a V10. the problem exist only at Idle. No problems when moving. The surge is when at idle below 700-800. I have the car in the shop and they cant seem to figure it out .
Mine does the samething except it's a PSD. When I first start it in the cold after a couple of minutes it surges at idle. Then it sounds like a jet airplane is in the exhaust pipe and the surge stops. I take it that it's the exhaust bypass valve that is making that noise. Is this normal operation for the valve?
I got this from "emtabmm" a member here. It's from a Ford SB:
SOME 1994-2003 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES/E-SERIES AND 2000-2003 EXCURSIONS
EQUIPPED WITH THE 7.3L DIT ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT AN IDLE ROLL/LOPE ON COLD
START THAT LASTS UP TO ONE MINUTE. THIS CONDITION IS CONSIDERED A
CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 7.3L. THE FOLLOWING STEPS CAN BE TAKEN BY THE CUSTOMER
TO REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF THIS CONDITION: CHANGE TO A 10W-30 OIL
(XO-10W-30-QSD) LABELED CI-4 OR CH-4; PLUG IN THE BLOCK HEATER WHEN OUTSIDE
TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BE BELOW 30F (-1C); LEAVE THE IGNITION IN THE
RUN POSITION FOR A FULL 2 MINUTES SO THE GLOW PLUGS CAN FULLY HEAT THE
CYLINDERS BEFORE CRANKING THE ENGINE.
Haven't gone that route yet although I was told it maybe a faulty engine coolant sensor. Tried to replace it yesterday it turned out to be a challenge due to the supercharger. Unfortunately Ford supplied me with the wrong part and I struggled to get the old one back in! Interestingly there are no codes. It is currently at another ford dealer for a $112 diagnostic. We'll see what happens this afternoon.
We had the same thing with our 2000 Excursion (w/ V10)at about 60,000 miles. I changed the spark plugs, oil, oil filter and the normal tune up. It appeared to clear it up for a while. We took our truck to a Ford dealer back in October with 82,000 miles for this problem again with a knocking and hissing noise. At the same time the oil gauge was going haywire and the oil light came on. It is now sitting at another ford dealer and has been since December. The engine is covered with sludge on the top half of the engine and none in the oil pan. The adjuster for the insurance company says it is a lack of maintenance. We have done all the maintenance that Ford recommends. The problem we are having is that we still can not find out what they mean by lack of maintenance nor what has caused the engine problem.
