If your speedometer is cable driven you can probably use a cable from your 86. I understand that at some point Ford got rid of the cable and went electronic.

Electric shift was possibly just an option. Electric shift has a motor on the side with wires, I want to say the motor mounts with 3 bolts. Manual shift would have a large lever that goes thru the floor of the truck that attaches to a large bolt on the side of the transmission with a linkage that runs back to the transfer case that move a crankshaft that goes where the motor is on electric shift units. I think the cases are nearly identical except for how the motor attaches. The internals would be the same except for the shaft going thru the case.

Regardless of the shifting, if you want your speedometer to work, you need a whole in the side of the tailshaft of the transfer case for the cable to go thru. The later units, after electric speedometers would still have the boss cast into the case, but no hole. I don't know if there are internal differences on the output shaft. It might be possible to drill out a newer case and add the speedometer ring to the tailshaft if needed. Would be easier to find the correct unit in the junkyard thought.

thanks for that info, but i do have the right one, the one i have has the hole for the speedo cable in the tail housing, this was my joy when i found out the t case i have is dated 1986 on the tag, the swap is on hold for a while now as winter has arrived, snow and -28 wind chill, no fun laying under a truck in that weather. so i will be indoors now making a start on my motorbikes ready for summer.....lol
